I think the Sound Designers need some serious applause. I don't hear to much chatter about this in the forums and they go largely unnoticed.
I play on Xbox One on a nice big flat-screen. The sound coming out of those are pretty poor, so I recently went out and got some speakers (just computer speakers, really, but it has a subwoofer at least). It improved, but nothing to write home about. Well, my wife is a nurse and she works nights sometimes, so when she's sleeping during the day, I'd have to turn the sound way down to not disturb her. So, I got myself a set of headphones...
....WOW!
I never knew there were so many levels of sound in this game! Obviously a lot of time and effort and talent went into creating the sound in this game. I've always been more interested in the visual aspect of Elite (which is beyond beautiful, so I haven't forgotten about you visual artists, don't worry), but I am now really appreciating the audio aspect of the game.
Kudos to you!
