Showed my friends it..

First chance I got to show 2 of my friends ED who I grew up with this weekend.

When we were kids we were massive fans of the original. So we played the latest one all night.

3 things I noticed,

1 of them is massively into PC the other not, he is basically a pure casual, both never even knew there was a new version of elite.

I explained that alot of people on the forums complaining about learning curves and controls and difficulty, both took to it like a duck to water.

I said, you might struggle docking here as its much harder than the first one.. no problem, I was impressed with how quickly they just got on with it.

3rdly, they both absolutely loved it, their grins when then they saw it for the first time was a picture. They were both blown away.

The friend who doesnt even own a PC is picking one up just for this game.

So 2 huge Elite fans didnt know there was a new one coming out, and both loved it, and neither of them thought it was anything short of simple to pick up and play.

I think this game will be massive when word of mouth spreads further.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
That's great! Glad they picked it up so fast.

Cheers Commander!

I was impressed.

You hear alot on the forums about how people may be off put by how difficult its perceived to play, but these 2 managed fine. They are nothing out of the ordinary, infact, I dare say one of them I think could be below the ordinary :)

The other thing was the fact these elite fans dont even know there is a new one, so even to some fans its still an unknown.

And I'm just over the moon to finally get 2 people into elite as I have tried for england and for some crazy reason nobody seems to care less :)

I can imagine how they felt when they found out about the new game...

I've said it before and Ill say it again. Best thing about the game for me is how, if you played 30 years ago you will probably pick up right where you left off as far as flight control is concerned.

Feels perfect, just the same as the original. Like riding a bike....

Apart from the er... 400 billion stars, and the shooting....

I showed it to an old Eliter shortly after SB came out and he seemed pretty taken with it. I took my case round and we managed to connect no problem to his telly, checked out the 3D which worked ok and then spent some time pootling around the core systems before getting nailed in Eranin by a PC Viper. By the end he was bemoaning that he didn't have a gaming PC anymore, may be another one will join when it comes out..

Told a colleague about it who had never heard of the original. He was interested enough to do some research online and a couple of days later he's telling me in the breakroom "I think I want that - I'm a mac user so I'll have to persuade the wife to let me buy a reasonable PC and a HOTAS but I think I could cope with that by the time it's out"

I'm glad it went so well, but; not to be ageist, I think all us slightly older gamers remember when you had to read the instructions for games (and some games had big instruction books) and practice a fair bit. before being even adequate

Some (not all) of the newer gamers do expect to be able to jump right in and just figure things out on the fly. I'm not sure what you can do about that 'cause you cannot dumb down ED anymore than it is ;)

Nice conversions, well done! Have some rep. ;)

Yeah you hear a lot of everything on the forums, the majority is of course complete nonsense. :)

dont forget the Mac version of the game is slated for release 3 months after the windows version so if his wife wont let him buy a PC to play on he wont have to wait too long ;)

No need to buy a PC if your friend has a Mac.
The more recent iMacs cope with Elite just fine, you just need to install Bootcamp/ Windows OS of your choice and you're good to go....:D

Just remember your friends had you along the way to talk them through simple things like requesting docking from a station and the basics of trading.

New players I would imagine are not too confused by the control scheme as the controls are pretty straight forward and once you get the concept you are flying in space its smooth sailing from there. From that standpoint its pick up and play. For those that maybe never got the chance to play the original elite the concept of the game is even more obscure.

Just bc your friends got the pick up and play perception, doesnt make it ridiculous that other new players may fumble through the beginning a little more.
