Side-by-side 3d on a 3D TV - yes / no / hints / tips ?

I have a secondary PC here running an i7 6700K into a GTX 970 4GB and I thought I might have a play at connecting it up HDMI-wise to my 42" 3D plasma to see what the side-by-side 3D of E D looks like on that.

Unfortunately I can find nothing definitive about it so I was wondering if any of you boffins can help:

I assume that I just connect up the HDMI cable, run E D go to settings and select 3D side-by-side in the graphics menu - but do I have to change owt else, like resolution, fullscreen, refresh rate, mouse pointer etc?

The TV has a 1920 x 1080 native resolution so I assume that is left as is in settings and the TV detects the side-by-side as a 3D signal?

I'd be grateful for any insights as I'd like to see how this looks.

i sometimes do this on an LG 46" passive 3dtv and its generally OK. feels like the 3d world has the depth of a fishtank on the wall if that makes sense.
tried it again a few weeks ago and something happened, it was like being shot in the eye with a lazer.. i had a massive green fizzing blob in my vision for about 15 minutes, i freaked out!
not doing that again.

I have done this fro time to time.

OP - yes your plan for setting up for side-by-side will work perfectly.

once set up in elite side you will see two pictures on TV.
then tell TV it's 3D and your off.

You will only get half-resolution as Elite still only renders 1080p for both images.

I've just progressed to a VR headset, but the 3D-TV route can give a bit of a feel of the effect, but not much.
Actual VR is really so immersive you feel the space around you.

The 3D-TV is still you sitting in your room looking at a 3D picture.
Non-the-less, 3D looks great and the cockpit of your ship especially will now have shape.

Good luck :)

Just thought I'd wrap this up...

Hook-up was simple, HDMI into 42" 3D plasma TV, start E D (swap into cheaper ship!) options 3D - side-by-side (mouse option changed automatically) - resume game - switch TV to 3D (it detected it) turn on the specs and off we go - no issues. Sound via the TV into my AVRx made the room shake as I went through the slot, so the audio via HDMI works. ;)

Was quite good fun, obviously not as immersive as the Rift but definite depth and scale apparent. I am not sure what the resolution turned out to be, I think it was the native 1920 (x 1080 vertical) but I might be mistaken - the fact that the graphics card splits the image into two made me think I was going to see a 860 horizontal image. Maybe the TV "fills in" this horizontal split as it stretches the signal from the graphics card? At any rate there did seem to be some artefacts that might have been the result of this, a sort of sparkling on edges.

The biggest downside comes from the fact that you are naturally viewing a dark screen with bright elements on it (the HUD in the main) so even when the shutter for one eye is darkened a feint image of the bright line gets through. At first I thought I might cure this by mucking with the "experimental" settings in E D options but I think that those had limited use. So at times it looked like an olde-worlde analogue TV signal with ghosting.

In conclusion, if someone is unable to justify moving into V R then this is a decent way to get a bit of fun if you already have a 3D television. I wouldn't think it was worth doing full-time though, images are not as sharp as in 2D and the system map will give you a headache (gal map is horrible too).
