Sidewinder for kicks .. anyone else?

I still have a sidewinder. Class A rated and kept in the hanger for trying out new things as its so cheap to replace.

I like my little Sidewinder mostly 'cause it really seems to draw out the Anacondas and Pythons in the RES, while the Vulture seems to mostly net vacuum.

I totally get the cheaper ship = more fun thing. I've yet to find a configuration for my Vulture that's half as much fun as using my Viper in combat.

After the big influx of new players over Easter, I got curious about what it's like 'at the sharp end' now, so last Saturday morning I did the following:

  1. Loaded up my T7 with every A-rated module I could cram into it, eventually reducing my credit balance from several million down to 33,001 credits.
  2. Bought a Sidewinder and stored my T7.
  3. Launched, powered down shields, lined up carefully, then gleefully boosted into the station wall.
  4. Chose not to rebuy by Sidewinder and instead spawned with a new loaner Sidewinder and 1001 credits back in the starting system.

I then had a great time playing the game essentially from scratch (aside from my rep and ranks), and was flying an Eagle on bounty runs by the end of Sunday. I had planned to keep at it until I could return to my stored T7 with a well-kitted Viper or Cobra and a million credits cash, but I was tempted back on Monday because the trading CG for the Clipper discount was too good to miss.

It was great fun being back in the starter systems, and I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to freshen up their game experience. I may well do it again sometime.

Rather than treat this game as a treadmill to get 'the next big ship' - I've really had a lot of fun recently just pimping out a Sidewinder and seeing how far I can push it in Nav / RES combat. Wings of NPCs that you would wipe out in 2 seconds with a Vulture become a game of skill in a Sidey. And no matter how bashed your ship gets, it costs less than a mars bar to repair the things when you get back to base.

I've been running with a mostly A rated loadout (save for D rated sensors and life support) with 2 X gimballed beams. Looks great using Oculus Rift! Power has been a bit of a challenge in that you have to work the pips to keep the thing rolling in combat so I'm going to try a mix of beam and multi next.

Who else keeps a Sidewinder in the garage? What pro Sidey tips have you got for loadout? Do you bother with shield boosters / shield cells / hull reinforcement?

I love this little ship!

Yeah man, I'm going to do it right now. I've got money to burn now, time to fit this baby with all the right tools and go bounty hunting.

I hope FD will think of a way to give the Sidewinder a longer life. Perhaps they could think of upgrades to make the early ships more viable in the long run.

Sidey is getting a smuggling buff in 1.3 I think. To be made 'inconspicuous' and less likely to get scanned.

I just started a second commander and stayed in the sidewinder until I'd maxed it. It was fun and by the time I'd finished it, it was decent. Could take on the big boys with help and alone if I was up for a long scrap.

Ultimately, though, it's just too slow. I'm in a pimped Eagle now. It's a step up and more fun. Next up, the good old Viper.

Devs already implemented those changes in the last patch, all small ships have a lower profile. Sidey is a great ship :) you can max one out for under a million. I had lots of them in various stations as marker beacons. Now maxing them out whenever I revisit one of those stations

I have had the same idea to rip around in a pimped out sidewinder. That is the build I am gonna go for. Has a Fuel scoop to get around with and just enough energy that if you put your FSD as second priority for power there are no issues with hardpoints deployed. One multicannon and one beam lazer because two power weapons would run into issues like having to retract hardpoint to drop a shield cell.
You could swap the kill warrant scanner for a point defense or electronic counter measures if you wernt going to anarchy systems. But thats personal preference.

I keep all my old ships. the only exception is i use a hauler to get from place to place if i need to transport my garage to a new home.

I agree it can be really nice for a change of scene to go to one of my old faithful... and in VR the feeling between ships is huge, esp if you jump from the wide open space of a clipper, and then go to the cramped tiny cockpit of the eagle.

fantastic stuff. I just hope we get missions which are ship specific which will force me to use my other ships for actual sensible in game reasons, rather than just for a change of scene to pass the time

I use Sidewinders as bookmarks in the game, to mark important systems ;D

But actually this is an interesting idea since Nav/RES BA using high-end ships in boooring..

Not exactly the same, but in the same spirit....

After running some successful CG ventures, I had some money.

I surprised myself longing for a cobra that I kitted full of A rated stuff.

It sort of liberating to fly a ship that does not have a million insurance cost everytime you explode.

I feel more daring as a smuggler, boosting through the slot without FA after carefully aiming from 9km.

I could do that in the python, of course, but its like driving fast with a someone in your head nagging and telling you how irresponsible you are. That is insurance for you.
