Newcomer / Intro Sidewinder internal thingy for exploration

the title is a bit confusing but I didn't know how to work it in a different way lol
i'm trying to get a hauler but i still have the sidewinder. i plan on making the money by doing some exploration but i only am able to get rid of one internal compartment thing that I can use for exploration.
Please don't tell me to just do bulletin board because i've tried, bruh. i've been to like 20 different stations everywhere and there's barely any jobs worth doing. I just wanna get some money to get a hualer and start my mining

You didn't know what else to call it? Why not just look at the module.... it's called a discovery scanner, and yes, you can use it to get some money together. I don't feel like putting a detailed discovery tutorial here though so I highly suggest you use Youtube to find out the best way of going about it.

This makes no sense? If you plan on doing some exploration you don't need to modify any of your internal compartments considering your sidewinder came with a discovery scanner.

it really depends on what your approach to exploring it. when you say exploring many will think of being hundreds of light years away from civilisation where there are no stations or NPC's, i think it's fair to say the sidewinder is not really ready for that.

however there are plenty of systems in civilisation that need scanning, and for that the sidewinder would be just fine.

you'd need a better FSD to let you travel further

you need either the basic, intermediate or advanced scanner to find unexplored objects when you're in an unexplored system. basic has the smallest range but also the only sensible price tag for what you are looking to do

the surface scanner is an optional extra to make a bit more money from the regular surface scan. to do a regular surface scan target and face object until scanning is complete, the detailed surface scanner would add more info to the results, but it is probably too expensive for now.

so, that leaves you with the basic scanner, a shield and one free slot, i'd recommend a fuel scoop in that slot. you don't need cargo when exploring

I moved from Sidewinder to Adder as quickly as I could. I hear some people move to the Hauler though.

Once you start getting some rep with a local faction, the missions will start to become more lucrative. You just have to grind out the a couple of dumb missions first.
Get to know a particular area, call it home for a week or so. Learn the trade routes, then you can profit on top of whatever missions you do.

Take ReaperAlex's advice above too.

I used to fly out in one direction, collecting data as I went. Stopped at a point about 100LY away from my home area, sold what I could there then tried to get back in another direction, selling what I could when I got back. I still have a basic scanner.

Good luck, Fly Safe!

I went off on my first expedition into uncharted systems with my Freegle. It was dangerous, perhaps not one of my best decisions, but I had fun and survived.

Listen to what these guys are telling you. It's all pretty good advice. My advice is if you have accumulated a lot of exploration data, avoid fights until you return to a station and sell that data. One death and its all gone. Fly safe.
