I was supposed to have started playing again about two hours ago but got pulled into the internet black hole of forums, but if I don't post this now I may never get around to it.
Last night I saw something both weird and captivating. As I was exiting Wundt Hub in the Brani system I saw what appeared to be three small craft perfectly aligned in front of me. As I manouevered away from the exit area I saw that it was actually five craft in a pattern, all perfectly positioned as though in an aerial acrobatic pattern (or maybe Battle Formation, hee hee). This obviously piqued my interest so I came about to have a fresh look from a better viewing position, but as I swung my ship around so that they were again ahead of me there were now seven ships! I caught one of them just as it finished being spawned (it had a blue glow to one corner, as though its shields were activated).
As I sat watching them, wondering if a whole fleet was about to appear, other craft from the station came out. As these other craft passed close to the group the individual group ships would fire their thrusters and motion away from the incoming craft, but always return to their previous position within the group pattern. It really was beautiful to watch, like ripples expanding and fading away. After it happened a few times I belatedly started pressing F10, then thought that a video would be better. Unfortunately, my gfx card does not have GeForce ShadowPlay, and all I have installed is some freeware program which I've previously used to capture small areas of my screen. I had never used it with ED, nor for capturing the full screen, and I doubted it could handle 1920x1080, but I decided to try it just in case (alas, when checking the end result, all it captured was one image from ED, although the sound was recorded all right).
Anyway, by the time I'd started it up and Alt-Tab'd back into ED one of the group's ships had disappeared, but the others retained their pattern positions. I waited a bit longer and eventually one of the craft started towards the station entrance. At first it looked like they were all moving in unison, but the others then fanned out and upwards, so that they were spread out across the width of the station, and above the entrance. A ship near the entrance was being blasted and blew up, and I think it was the one from the group, but I can't be sure. However, its demise seemed to trigger the other group ships into proper action, and from then on they moved independently, just as one would expect the NPC ships to move, so I stopped watching them and got on with hauling my load to my original destination.
I hope I get to see the spectacle again, but I'll be miffed if I do, knowing that I cannot record it. All I have to show is some screengrabs. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Ooh, there are more than I thought:

Wait, they're multiplying!:
