sidewinder to BP

Could you get to Beagle in a non engineered sidewinder by taking a detour and following the arm to make life easier or at least close? with only J1's (I think frawd scooped some from planet side while someone blasted rocks??), I've always crossed the abysss both pre-engineers in an Asp (~35ly iirc) and more recently Dolphin with 50+ly and that was more like "what abyss?" - 27.45 is the most you will get from a sidewinder with J1 though so that's not a viable route.

im sure the outer rim is possible though as Frawd made it :)

I didn't cross the abyss...I entered the outer arm from much further east and then headed towards BP.

Frawd was assisted in his search for jumponium by suitably equipped Cmdrs who blasted planetside mats for him which he then scooped up while remaining airborne.....

Suitably equipped of course, meaning balls the size of asteroids....

I had the rock-rats and honorary rock-rats (like the awesome Cmdr Traveller_GG above) to help me with collecting mats...couldn't have done it without them.

I thought I'd chime in.

I'm on my way back currently in my Sidewinder, build here:

No shield, got an AFMU but I haven't used it. I didn't put exact values for mods, only picked best roll for each - you want the best for FSD, sensors and life support, the rest doesn't matter as long as it gives mass decrease on secondary. The end result for me was 32.88 ly on full tank. Second to last jump you need to make is a bit longer, but with that jump range you can make it without jumponium on half full tank, stars are scoopable so no issues there. I gathered jumponium mats before heading out, used them to make the Deep Space Challenge after reaching Beagle.

Anyway, if you engineer and use jumponium, you can make it with an SRV. Stock Sidey would absolutely need premium jumponium for the last part of the trip, engineered one would need tier 1 or 2... Probably 2. As for the timeframe, it took me one month and nine or ten days, but instead of going straight for the BP I went Sag A* - Colonia - Roncevaux Crossing (link below) - along the arm, so it was some 90-100k ly distance.

My advice: if you decide to do it, engineer the FSD at least, ditch the shield and mining laser. And when the Voices start to sing, you sing with them. After a while they will let you pick the songs.

I don't think i would have the time, patience and guts to make that trip in a sidewinder...
Good luck CMDR !

The most comedic part of Frawd's journey for me is still the fact that we met up when I was on my way back from my first visit there, I got back to the bubble flew out to BP again (DWE), met him on the way past again - and then turned BACK from BP to give him a hand getting there. Not to mention flying back out to meet him yet again to help escort him the last 1000LY in to the bubble. (there would've been another meeting on the way back from DWE but I got sidetracked rescuing a stuck Asp in the abyss.

Don't forget that there was an "incident" involving a canyon wall that put Frawd's journey back a bit.
