Sidewinders: Does anyone fly these by choice?

Per the title.

I'm just getting back into ED and have a fleet of ships.
Some of which I rarely fly but have in the hanger for sentimental reasons, like a Sidewinder, or because I can, like the Cobra IV.

There's also a bunch of ships I bought years ago, engineered up the wazoo, then gutted and sold for various reasons, like the Diamond Back Explorer.

It made me wonder, apart from being the starter ship which everyone (?) cannot wait to upgrade away from, does anyone actually use a Sidewinder by choice?
If so, what are your use-cases and load outs?

Cheers

the sidny is a fine ship kept mine for years, now engineered up to the best i think .dont use it much except for fun,but did take out a npc conda in a battle those beams gimbeld can be effective, pot luck i admit, but that was my starter ship never lost it once, but that was my second play through , have fun with it.

The Sidewinder gets a second lease of life once the player starts with Engineering & adding the Enhanced Drive, they are a hoot to fly, as are the hauler, eagle & other small 'starter' ships.

I have a Sidey I use for exploration sometimes, although I don't fly it as often as my explo eagle which has a front door rather than exiting from the rear.

For practical use outside of exploration/fun to fly not really unless I just fancy a challenge. Smallest ships I use for faction support stuff is probably a Python for trade/light combat or a Vulture for combat.

For PP 2.0, the Sidey is perfect for scanning wakes around stronghold carriers specially with the enhanced thrusters (you need speed & agility to get around fast because wakes decay). With the heavy NPC ship traffic around the carriers, it's a good source for obtaining encoded signals and earns you merits at the same time.

Sometimes I just got to take it out for a spin

It's my alt's main ship, used for carrier-based exploration and exobio. About 40ly range, can comfortably explore everything within a hundred light years or two around the carrier, extra fuel tank and SCO for reaching distant bodies, can land on a postage stamp for exobio.

One of my deep regrets with ED is that we never got to have the Anaconda variant with a Sidewinder dock 😞

Piracy. Hilarious against anacondas, corvettes and cutters, win lose or draw.
As others have said, cytoscamblers, missiles and rails can be surprisingly strong on those small hardpoints.
And it’s pretty hard to hit a well flown sidey, especially with enhanced thrusters.
And probably a cheap rebuy. Although, it can be surprisingly expensive (for the cheapest ship in the game) depending on what you kit it out with.

I was the first player to get triple Elite using only a Sidewinder. I've not heard of anybody since then, though a couple tried. It's not that difficult when you know the game. It's like a puzzle and challenge in one. It's something to do when you're bored. It took me 432 hrs. It should be quicker now with more knowledge and many time-savers introduced since then. FD gave me a special gold paint job for it.

I got blown up about three times, so a new challenge would be to do it ironman.

I also use a Sidewinder for griefing the griefers when I'm bored, which is quite entertaining. You soon wipe the smugness off their faces when they blew you up and thought they'd won - even better when there's a gang of you with multiple accounts so blocking doesn't work (don't wing up).
