Sigma 957

Ah, Babylon 5 reference.

The nomenclature system in Babylon 5 is obscure, and difficult to relate to anything in terms of real-life stars, though some logical extrapolations can be made - for example, "Epsilon-3" is almost certainly "Epsilon Eridani". But which real-life star, if any, "Sigma-957" is supposed to refer to, is impossible to determine. It's presumably technobabble.

I am pleasently surprised that someone else remembers Babylon 5! That makes sense as Babylon 5 was far more fantasy than other Sci-Fi shows. I just started playing a few weeks ago and immediately decided i have to make a pilgramage to Wolf 359. Im interested to see if they have any Star Trek references there. Frontier seems to do an outstanding job adding homages to other Sci-Fi media. I have to say this game is unbelievably satisfying at scratching that itch to explore the cosmos.

They do have to be careful with placing "homages". Copyright violations, and all that. They can name stars after real-world stars (like Wolf 359 and Arrakis), people (like space stations named after George Lucas and Ridley Scott) and even mythological figures whose names are commonly annexed by other sci-fi genres (like Vulcan and Miranda). But directly borrowing names of planets, races and cultures from other sci-fi franchises and using them in-game is simply asking for a fist full of lawsuits.

Kickstarter backers were able to purchase some naming rights back at game launch, and some of those naming suggestions may have been homages to other sci-fi franchises; some copyright-breaking names may have snuck through if the guys checking the names were unaware of the potential conflict.

And yes, it would be convenient if everybody forgot that the name "Thargoid" was borrowed from an old British sci-fi comedy radio show. So please don't mention that too often.

Hey, he never complained when he was alive, I don't think he's going to rise from the grave to press the issue!
