Signing up for the CGs: Am I blind?

Okay, so this weekend was my first CG. I hauled several loads of goods from the bubble to the Spirit of Nysa. During this, I checked the CG at the mission board regularly, including at the Spirit of Nysa. I did not see an option to sign up for the CG - I remember checking, as I thought I had to deliver the items via the mission depot like a source and return mission. Since I saw no enroll button, I thought that I was automatically enrolled by selling the items.

That was obviously not the case.

Where, exactly, was the CG signup button? How did I miss it? Would there be any benefit to contacting Frontier support on this?

In the official manual there is a screenshot (click on the thumbnail below) of what you will see on any Mission Board.

Personally I found this manual more useful when I was trying new things out for the first time: https://thecakeisaliegaming.wordpress.com/2015/01/25/getting-started-in-elite-dangerous-a-guide/

I had a similar issue, not with finding the sign up button, but with finding out I needed to sign up in the first place.
I started playing this game 2 weeks ago, and have taken the path of the explorer. I read the GalNet news and was interested in taking part in the Sirius Ammonia Worlds Exploration Goal, and after reading the article on the Goals page as well, I headed to the Coal Sack Nebula on an economical route, exploring systems along the way, and even chancing upon an Ammonia World, which I mapped.
After making it to Betancourt Base I sold in my exploration data. Then I checked out some of the other starport services, among which was the "Missions" section, a section that I as an explorer only glanced at one or two times. I was suddenly remembered that there's also a Community Goals section there, and even though I already knew what to do, I checked it out anyway to see if there was any additional useful hints, but in fact there was some crucial information there: you have to sign up before handing in exploration data. I was quite a bit  because I found out about having to sign up after I had sold all the data I gathered traveling to the nebula.
I've now heard it's an open secret that you have to sign into community goals first, but I really think this kind of crucial information should have been in the news articles, if only for new players.

Well, to some extent, glad it wasn't just me.

First community goal I tried to participate in. Delivered 11k tons to Spirt of Nysa. Tried to ask in local if I was doing it right but I think replies assumed I had signed up for the thing. Put in a ticket hoping they'd have pity on me since I did, in fact, deliver the goods (provided logs). No dice. They were nice but said they could not manually award those types of items. I guess lesson learned but rather heartbroken about it since that FSD is unique and exploration has been my thing since starting Elite.

I suggested to support that in the future there should be some indication that another action is needed since the demands at Spirit of Nysa were set to infinity for the goods needed for the CG.. A pop up window perhaps when you sell but haven't signed up for the goal perhaps? Something to help new players do the right thing....shrug.

Update: Support said they could understand my disappointment but there will be other CG's with rewards soon. Perhaps, but none of those will likely be nearly as useful to me as a double engineered class 5 FSD. Feel like my Phantom is handicapped now. There's a CG out now with no rewards....Maybe throw us a bone FDev :p
