Silent running.... is this true ?

Say you're carrying some dodgy cargo (stolen goods) into a spaceport to complete a mission. I assume you can still be done for by the cops if they scan you and don't like what you're carrying.

So is it true, that if you enable silent running, you can evade the scan ?

Line yourself up with the entrance from about 8Km. Then switch off all non essential modules - weapons, cargo hatch, FSD (and interdictor if you have one). This'll drop your power and temp a lot.
Then speed up to the blue guidance bar on the throttle display. You can get in quietly this way but for extra security switching to silent running should do it!
Good luck :)

I've been scanned a lot while running silent. Frankly, you're better off just hauling ass into the station. Keep your shields up in case you come in pretty rough. Usually if you come in from the planet side, you're more in line with the letterbox. If I come in at a ridiculous angle, I'll jump back out and try again. Not worth risking the ridiculous fines.

My understanding of it is that the feds don't notice you if you're running without a heat signature.
My guess is you don't show up on sensors, which is why they don't "see" you.

But I've only smuggled one thing so far, so I'm far from an expert.

I agree with Eagle 5 - there's still a chance of being spotted - but if you're close you can boost in and land quick or failing that - jettison the cargo to only get a small fine.

So far I've been lucky then :) Once I got the warning I was being scanned after I landed on the pad. I VERY quickly went to the BB and gave the cargo :)

I have been scanned everytime using silent running.
Never been scanned by turning off all modules except thrusters and ignoring silent running.

Gotta be all elegant about it, huh? I just usually boost in and bounce off something. It's handy if there's a hauler or sidewinder coming out at the same time. I use them to shed some speed as I blow through the letterbox lol.

I haven't been carrying iilegal cargo yet, but just to practice and test things out (and to feel like a badass) - I've been flying through the docking shield at 200+ KM/s and haven't been scanned yet. Nothing turned off or the likes.

In the early betas I had some success powering almost everything down, setting throttle to max, disabling flight assist and then throttling down again (after aiming VERY accurately). Although it's kind of fun I now find it much quicker and easier just to set all pips to engines and keep boosting until I'm in.

If I'm not lined up at first I fly to a point where I am (making sure not to get any closer to the station). I can't say I've done this a great many times but it's worked every time I have.

As far as I understand the security forces never scan you once you're in the station. I'm not sure but I think you may be safe even if they start scanning before you're in but don't finish until after you're in.

I go with, use outpost - no messing about involved ;)

Really, anything that needs the "Black Market", I'm near Psamathe Kapp Terminal - no system police, easy docking - ok, I get a bit less selling there but as there is no risk it is worth it to me.

I find rushing the toaster is way simpler than bothering with silent running. I do this almost all the time just to avoid copscans on principle and for practice. Even if you get tagged, as long as you make the inside before the scan finishes you're gravy.

I've been smuggling a lot, largely from scavenging shiny things in anarchy systems, and I've only been scanned once while silent running into a station and I think that's because I was going too slowly. Usually, I switch everything non-essential off, make sure I'm pointed at the entrance in a nice straight line, switch on silent running, and then set my thrusters to max.

You get real good at docking real fast.

watch this to see how it works (and how it goes wrong, and how to get in fast)

Yeah Silent running isn't fool proof. Just like with players, the AI if they are close enough ( under 1km away) appear to be simulated to have used their eyes in the same way that a human commander will eyeball a silent running opponent.

I've done a fair bit of smuggling, and I still use silent running on my station approach and watch the locale of any NPC security. On occasions, I've been scanned by the station (that's pretty unavoidable), but so long as you're quick through the docking port, the station scan doesn't get a chance to complete.

Like others have said already, get good at going in fast. Or just use outposts and avoid taking missions calling for illegal/stolen goods at stations in patrolled space.

I rush the station, but ill only turn silent running on once i start getting scanned instead of having it on during approach. Once you disable silent running you will have built up enough heat to be seen from 6km away.

@DraigUK Great video. Nice to know some techniques there. Loved the cockpit windows icing up :)

Yesterday I got probably the best easy/profit ratio mission I've had so far. Transporting 2 slaves from one outpost to another. In the same system ! No scans, no cops, just a quick transport. 44,600CR thankyouverymuch. The 2nd outpost took almost 15 mins to reach though but well worth it.
