Silly question maybe, Whats the point of Nav beacons

Hi Everybody,

This may be a very silly question, But whats the point of Nav beacons. At they just there to should theoretical roads in the sky? or do they have a higher function.

As of yet I have not visited one, Should I?

Thanks

No it's a good question. One of the many things thought to be a placeholder but turns out actually isn't.

You may as well visit one, just a few NPCs existing for a little bit.

They are there to farm bounties. While you are in the area of the nav beacon ships will warp in (spawn), some will be wanted. They will hang around for a while and then warp out, if you have inclinations towards piracy you can also follow them with a wake scanner and interdict them mid cruise.

Find an anarchic system with a nav point in it and you should be in for some good bounty hunting (or piracy if that's your thing).

If bounty hunting, make sure you have a Kill Warrant Scanner, as many targets will carry bounties from other parts of the galaxy.

As the others have said, Nav Beacons are sort of a gathering point for some easy bounty hunting or piracy.

In my experience you get more ships with bounties at nav beacon, but they generally have lower bounties than random ships in supercruise.

Want those big prizes you want to interdict them in supercruise. Want a steady flow of combat and bounties then go to nav beacon.

Time for another chapter of Tronicus' B.S. explanation of the universe! Today: NAV Beacons

So you see, it's kind of like this: The standard model 4719 Nav beacon has been in use since the second great mapping expedition. Thousands of drone ships were sent out to into the galaxy, loaded with beacons. As they jumped into a new system, a beacon was placed next to the largest solar object in that system, given a unique identifier, and the great galactic records hall updated with the information. Now, these were some pretty basic drones, which is why although every known system now has a NAV beacon, millions of systems are still unexplored. These were placed in a geo-synchrynous orbit, that way a pilot has a fixed point in space that can be plotted for a jump.

Since these beacons are located where everyone jumps into a system, pilots of less than honorable intentions often hang around looking for the sweet low hanging fruit. Thus, a preferred spot for hunting pilots with bounties. ;)

I think they were something to do with exploration, but that whole side of the game seems to have been dumbed down significantly, so I guess they are useless now.

I always assumed they were for the frameshift drive to get a ship from A-B.
Otherwise a ship could fly straight into a sun.
