Simple dev question: clarify future paid content

Morning folks.

Recent expo news and more confirmed the imminent future sees the termination of the season pass, as we make way for more microtransactions.

Please can a dev or FD rep confirm whether this increased store dependency will see you venture out of the aesthetic: it doesn't seem to be concrete whether the microtransactions will remain effectively effectless in-game, or whether we will actually be required to purchase so-called "premium" ships/content to use them.

As a particularly hot topic a straightforward answer would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

EDIT: Appears to have been clarified in a recent stream there will be no p2w transactions. If I am on the same page as FD about p2w, this answers my query.

Well, one piece of good news is that Ed said multiple times in the stream yesterday that there would be no "pay to win" content as part of this.

I think they will announce something when they are ready to or want to announce something. Otherwise they would've announced it at the expo.

Hey Astral! This is a very reasonable and understandable post. Hopefully I can put your mind at ease a little.

In addition to all the content talked about at Frontier Expo, we also have some pretty cool things in the works which will be available to purchase. We're not ready to talk about them just yet so we can't give you any details but rest assured that the lifetime expansion pass owners will be looked after and will be getting their hands on premium content as part of their lifetime expansion pass before the end of 2018 and the Beyond series of updates.

I hope that helps,

Zac

Hi mate.

I was aware there were comms aimed at a query for lifetime pass holders. What "premium" content is in relation to that, I don't know.

I think it wouldn't be too difficult to answer on a simple level whether said transactions in future will be necessary to access any kind of content, and it's probably one of the best clarifications they can make at this stage. It's not like one can sneak that kind of change in under the radar, anyway ;)

In keeping with the smug sarcastic tone of this thread so far:

Hmmm controversial...I'm of the opposite view; I think they'll announce something when they're not ready to or when they don't want to.

...or here's something more useful - haha glad I checked - was about to link Zac's post ^

I really hope they stick to their own word and never release any game-mechanic influencing content via micro transactions.

The trouble with this thread now, is twofold. One, the content is a year away, so it really may not be decided yet, exactly what model it will follow. Secondly, let's take the worst case scenario, that they will make elite pay to win in some way, though this is highly unlikely, let's just assume it for a minute. What does that change today? Would you quit today, in disgust over something that won't happen for a year?

I can understand from a curiosity perspective, but any clarification given now, changes nothing. Might as well wait for the official announcement. The statement that needed making (how those who have ALREADY paid for future content will be treated), has been answered in as satisfactory way as possible already.

If I were FD, I'd never even dream of releasing an unfinished plan to the user base for them to dissect a year ahead of time, that would just invite rage quitters a year early.

Indeed but then people requested further clarification due to some ambiguity to said communication to which this was the further response from the "Head of communication"

Great Job? [where is it]

I can answer that one: yes, you will at some point need to pay for some content.

Cheers for the input mate, but this isn't a debate thread :p would appreciate clarification if available.

I think it is safe to say this goes beyond mere curiosity, and isn't too much to ask. Nothing vitriolic intended-what we have so far simply comes across as unconfident or worse.

It's obviously lootboxes.
1.0

I mean EA and WB are doing it, so why not FDEV. They're just waiting for the other companies to iron out the kinks.

I can see it now... from spaceship skins and wingsuits... to engineering mats or individually prerolled modules... to new spaceships! Relax, it's all ethical because it can be acquired in-game.

I wasn't trying to have a discussion. I was actually trying to end the discussion. lol. No worries though. :)

Frankly, it's threads like this that drive Devs away from making comments that give us hints of what is to come. As soon as they offer us a glimpse of what is coming .... somebody demands "clarification" and makes a big issue of it

'There is something else coming but we're not ready to talk about it yet.'

'Ok but please will you talk about it?'

'No sorry, we're not ready to talk about it yet. In fact the only reason we said anything at all was because people were speculating wildly'

'Ahhh so it's pay-to-win-lootboxes then. THE SKY IS FALLING!!!1!!11ONE1!'

*self-immolates*

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

It is not yet ready. Be patient. At least we know now that some paying content will drop along the free 4 updates included in The Beyond.

Everybody should be happy with such good news :
1- free content for horizons players
2- paid new content for some extra stuff

It is perfect to me.

Even if (and it's a big if) they did sell non-cosmetic content in the store, would it really be all that different to what we already have? You were buying the same type of content when you bought Horizons, it just came as a package rather than letting you pick and choose what you wanted.

It's not like the game can be literally free. ED has to be bringing in revenue somehow.
