Simple guide to saving off and reloading control bindings

I know there is already a stickied and quite extensive post about configurations, however I was struggeling to find the information I was looking for in that so...

I use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS set up. I have developed, over time, my own configuration for this that means I can just about do everything in the game (bar typing system names and chat) without toughing the keyboard.

However Elite seems to periodically forget my settings and revert to Mouse and Keyboard. Just this morning it did this and when I set it back to custom non of my settings where there.

  • Does anyone else have this issue?
  • Can anyone tell my which file your settings are saved into?
  • Is there a best practice for making a back up of this so I can quickly reload it next time Elite forgets my control settings?
  • Is there a solution for this forgetfulness?

Many thanks in advance.

I have a special .binds file I created with all the bindings I want for my T.Flight Hotas X. Just make sure to click "Apply" when you go to Controls and don't change anything. I noticed that whenever I clicked "Cancel", it would go back to "Custom" and I'd lose my bindings. Creating a separate binds file solves the issue if it's to happen again. Hope that helps.

To a degree. But how do I make my own binds file?

you can find the bindings file in:
.../users/yourname/AppData/Local/Frontier Developments/Elite Dangerous/Options/Bindings/Custom.binds

Just make a backup of that file and restore it when your custom bindings change. It hasn´t happened to me in many months though.
Also, my game doesn´t recognize any custom name I´ve tried to give to the file, so I keep it as Custom.binds

It only lost my binds when a controller (that was used in the binds) wasn't found when the game launched (my pedals were broken and removed). This is when the binds were reset to M & K.
Besides the "custom.binds" file the is a "StartPreset.start" file in the same folder where the type of binds ist saved (keyboard, custom, ...). Didn't try yet but you probably can save here the name of your "own-custom-bind-file".
Backup always advised. ;)

That is what I was looking for!

Thank you. I have now copied off my setting. Interestingly I does show in game for me; I now have tow entries for Custom. Importantly, I have made a separate backup in another location.

Try changing the second line to the name of your file. My binds file is "VA_01.binds"
(BTW StartPreset.start holds the name of the startup binds.)

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<Root PresetName="VA_01">
<KeyboardLayout>en-GB</KeyboardLayout>
<MouseXMode Value="" />

I think that is what was happening. The Joystick part of my set up was not showing in the devices window. After I unplugged and replugged the USB in it worked again (I quickly tested in 'another big space game in development').

As you say, this must reset the 'custom' file which I might file as a bug. At least I now have my own backup I can re-copy back in if it happens again.

Yep, once the same device is recognised again you can re-copy your backup else it will always reset to keyboard.

I want to follow up on this. I'm a new player with a HOTAS 4. When I downloaded the game I set the bindings for that with one or two changes. I never really got into the game, only through all the training missions. I decided to install Voice Attack and HCS Verity voice pack. When I went to re-set the key bindings to be perfectly compatible with that, somewhere I made a mistake somewhere and now parts of my HOTAS don't work. I've been told that I probably set a wrong key in the joystick settings but I can't find it. So my real question is, is there a way to clear out all the setting and start over? (Of course being much more careful this time so I don't make the same mistake). Someone another thread here said to delete the file you are all talking about in this thread, and then the next time I log it it will be at default and I can start over. Is that true? I've had the folks at HCS tell me that would be a huge mistake. Any help here would be appreicated.
