Simple question ...

Yes and no. :p

Its massively multiplayer only in the sense that tens of thousands can play online at the same time and effect the same gameworld with their actions, but not massively multiplayer in the traditional sense since only a maximum of 32 players can ever be together in the same instance at the same time.

A massive number of players can play online and it's a game.

A massive number of players can not be in one section of space at a time, not together, the system shards people into twitch manageable islands.

The persistent online universe is the same for everyone, cause and effect of player actions is experienced by all online players.

If say for example an important combat bond mission appears with a fight between Fed and Imp capital ships. There might be 10, 20, 100 or more islands all playing the same scenario with 32 players a piece.

The proposal is that the results of those efforts are aggregated into the same result for all the shards/islands. So if the net result is that the Fed capital ship get's taken out, that's what everyone will see.

Who you get matched with in an island is based on friends lists, ignore lists and other interesting stuff.

Its worth noting though that if ED stands the test of time like Eve-O has and is around in 10 years time, those 32 player limits may one day be raised and even removed completely as technology improves. Then we may see a more traditional MMOG emerge.

I'd be surprised if we're still limited to 32 player instances in 2024 !

I would be interested to see the solution for 1000 players trying to dock at the same time at one particular station. :D

Maybe, after years of service, the old Coriolis type stations will be retired.

And new models of Coriolis station, 3-4 times more larger will make their appearance

Most MMORPG have caps as to how many people can be in one section at any one time, or did in their infancy. As Erimus said, some of these caps were lifted as technology advanced.

But I have to wonder on whether that it always a good idea.

Eve Online's big player battles often crashed nodes or the server in the past, but when they didn't, lag was so great that movement would grind to a halt and it really did turn into a very boring and frustrating affair where you were just monitoring numbers.

The twitch combat in Eve:Valkyrie is part of the Eve universe but is being kept separate from the main space combat game also.

The one thing that will change this situation is when the client side is secure enough to not be changed by the user. Then more of the workload can be worked out on your own computer instead of clogging up the server. At the moment that would not work as people will easily be able to hack the code and exploit the game.

You can also choose to play by yourself, online or offline, with friends or everyone. So there should be options to suit everyone.
