Since 5/18/2021 I habe been getting "'EliteDangerous64.exe' has encountered a problem..." - Game is now unplayable for me

Hello! Been a player of Elite Dangerous for some years now on the same PC. I play through STEAM. On the night of 5/18/2021, I was finishing a mining run and my Python's cargo hold almost full of void opals, alexandrite, grandidierite, and low temp diamonds. Suddenly, the game froze for a few seconds and then crashed giving me the message " 'elitedangerous64.exe' has encountered a problem and cannot continue". Ever since then, I cannot play the game! It was the next day that I saw that the Odyssey upgrade was in progress. I only have Horizons and have not upgraded yet to Odyssey. I can get into the game main screen but as soon as I click on "Open Play" or "Solo Play" and the spinning orange ship loading screen is up, the game crashes giving me the same error. I have changed nothing on my PC as far as hardware or software in months or longer. I upgraded my NVIDIA drivers. I have un-installed the game, deleted the folders under AppData, rebooted the PC, re-installed the game, and still have the same problem. I have even repeated those same steps and installed into a different directory on a different hard drive and still have the same issue. The game I have been playing for years is now unplayable and I don't know what to do. I have opened a support ticket with Frontier and am still waiting. I was hoping someone else may have experienced the same and might have a solution. I started my two-week vacation and was looking forward to a lot of Elite Dangerous.. now I can't play at all. I am hoping it is something related to the roll-out of Odyssey and something that can and will be fixed soon.

Do you have a Nvidia 1080? This might be the issue.

However, personally I think this is a server side issue. For some reasons our characters are stuck somewhere causing a function or whatever to crash and that is why we cannot log in with any game mode. I would really like to make use of an "unstuck character"-feature...

Thanks for your response! I have a Nvidia 980 ti, so could be similar enough.

I was thinking this as well. It seems very coincidental that it happed right about the time they started the upgrade to Odyssey. I have had issues with the game in the past, but simply deleting the folders in the AppData folder solved the issue I was having. This time, nothing works and it is very frustrating as my PC hardware/software is the same as it has been. I am really hoping it is something that is on their end that will be fixed soon. Still waiting to hear back from the support team.
