Single 1080ti enough for VR?

Well, I'm pretty much finished building my new pc (first pc build since the 90s!), I was wondering if it'll strong be enough for a good VR experience with just a single GPU?

By good enough I mean high-ultra settings without stuttering. I have a rift, if that matters.

Also what sort of settings should I be aiming for, I'll admit I get a bit confused by all the mentions of supersampling, hmd quality etc... And I'm a bit lost with VR as a whole, I did try it with my old 1070 machine, but it looked pretty bad so I never played in VR again.

Many thanks, sincerely a VR noob.

Full specs (including all the irrelevant stuff):
-i7 8700k. (@5.1GHz)
-EVGA GTX1080ti SC2 (OC'd to 2015MHz)
-32Gb GSkill Trident Z RGB (3200MHz/CL14)
-256Gb Samsung 960 evo m.2 nvme drive
-1tb Samsung 850 pro SSD
-Gigabyte Aorus Z370 Gaming 7 motherboard
-NZXT Kraken X52 AIO CPU cooler + 2 extra fans for push-pull config
-Thermaltake Core P3 case
-Corsair HX1000i 80+ Platinum PSU + individually braided modular cables

SLI is not supported in ED or most major VR titles, and unlikely to be supported in any foreseeable future.

So for ED, one GPU is all you can make use of.

I'm using a single 1080ti for VR on all ultra-settings. It handles everything extremely well. No glitching, smooth as butter.. Enjoy your VR you'll never look back - (well, not quite literally as VR allows you to do just that!)

I have a single GTX 1080 (non-ti) that isn't overclocked, with a slower processor and less RAM, with the Samsung Pro 850 SSD, and VR works fine on the Rift for me. I think you'll be fine.

As the others have said, you should be fine.

I use a standard 1080, and run typically high with some ultra settings and it is very smooth. The two settings you will want to experiment with a bit are the supersampling and the HMD Quality. Personally I use SS on 1 and HMDQ on 1.5. For some reason supersampling can seem to be challenging for VR and cause stuttering if set too high, but you can also get perfectly acceptable quality by setting SS below 1 and bumping up HMDQ correspondingly.

Yes. I run it with everything on Ultra.

Just bear in mind, that even with 1080ti, you will still see a 'screen-door' effect. That's a limitation of current gen headsets though

Since there are as many opinions as people I would suggest some reading of threads posted here ever since the 1080ti arrived. A precise google search will get you a crap load of opinions and setting recommendations. Being their are so many ways and settings the choices become highly personal taste based on how and where you play the game. Just the fact that we all have different eyes will lead to highly subjective points of view. There are no quick answers for such a complex question, but lots for a self-proclaimed noob to read. https://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&...-ab..0.4.358...33i160k1j33i21k1.0.DHfRzKNHQNc

I have a 1070 and all is OK here. AWS kicks in for some things, but I don't even notice without looking at my logs to see when it changes...

Is an Oculus Rift good enough for Bit Mining?

C'mon. Enough already with showing off your PC spec's under the pretence of 'wondering whether it's powerful enough'. You swap out a 1070 for a 1080, so you know a bit about putting a rig together. But you haven't googled VR requirements? Oh, come on, please...

I've just bought a Koenigsegg Agera RS. I was just wondering whether the suspension would be okay on British roads. Enough, already.

Alright sunshine, enough with the attitude, I asked a civil question. Since I know virtually nothing about vr I have no idea how well elite will perform, or if there's even a card currently available that will max out the settings in vr.

If you've nothing to add to the discussion just stay quiet.

Just enjoy your beast of a card, Jon, both in terms of glorious visuals alongside unparalleled performance and lording it over the less economically fortunate among us. Don't let any of us who are staring at you with big puppy dog eyes bring you down;)

I think the new Vive Pro (which I'm not sure you can call next gen) is supposed to improve on the screen door effect. Moving images aren't too bad but static images are an issue... depth is amazing though can't be compared with a monitor.

Just remember you are never going to get graphics that look remotely as good as they do on a good flat screen, simply because the resolution just isn't there yet with the current VR tech. Whilst you should get a smoother ride than the 1070 if you tried that with the max settings, you won't necessarily see any huge improvement in the visual quality.

However I think you'll find that many VR users, myself included, are willing to forgo that level of visual fidelity in order to experience that feeling of "being there" in your ship, that playing on a flat screen just can't get anywhere close to.

For anyone without a huge budget I can confirm Elite runs great in VR on the 1060 and 1070.

Not super ultra maxed out settings, but it still looks great.

I even substituted an i5 on my 1070 machine for a couple of weeks and didn't even notice.

I also concur with those who posted HMD quality 1.5 and SS 1.0 works best - running that way on both on my Rift/1070, and my 1060 laptop/Lenovo WMR.

Yeah, I think you're right, my old card was probably running it just fine, I was probably expecting too much with regards to image quality.

It seems I'm somewhat underwhelmed with vr, I honestly am not finding it as immersive as just playing in high details on a big screen.

I switched to VR a few weeks ago, After fiddling with settings for days I got my 1070Ti & i7-7700k and Oculus CV1 to work well with SS~1 and HMD~1.5, the remaining settings are mostly Ultra, detail/Resolution is ok. I'm really not that taken in with VR for the following reasons,

The FOV within the headset is too narrow, tunnel vision, to simulate this in 2D, play 2D whilst wearing a S.C.U.B.A. dive mask.
The visual clarity and detail is nowhere near 2D's.
The headset gives me a "ice cream" headache after a few hours of wearing, (and no its not tight).
I can't play with the SRV in VR due to nausea from motion, revert to 2D for SRV work.

I'm continuing with VR because of Combat, I like the immersion of Combat in VR, but the lack of detail/resolution of the ships in Combat VR is disappointing.
