single person

Can anyone confirm if you are able to play single person then go to online playing or will they be completely separate? I ask because my internet is of a very slow nature.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

You can play single-player online, which I imagine would have low network requirements. Then you can switch between that and multiplayer freely (as the design currently stands).

If your network connection is totally down, you can play single-player offline, but you can't switch between that and online play.

There are 2 single player modes.

Single player Online - this allows you to play alone but online and enjoy all the evolving dynamics of the universe that occur in the multiplayer world. Your universe will be constantly updated.

Single player Offline - this is effectively just like the original Elite/Frontier in so far as it being a static unchanging universe with no updated content as far as I know.

I think i'll be playing offline by myself initially until I get used to flying a spaceship adequately. Wouldn't want to look like an idiot in front of the whole universe would I?

Last when Michael was queried on this he said it won't be entirely static, there will be some bits of background simulation, however how much it is not decided yet.

Absolutely there will. It was something that was defined in the KS. I am one of those fellow commanders for SP offline too. :)

yeah you can play single player offline in online mode while you are playing multiplayer online in single player mode.

awesome

Kind of like watching a busy boat ramp during the first weekend of good weather

If you see a ship ignore matching rotation, aiming for the middle of the opening and hitting max thrust & boost, that could be me. Old docking habits die hard.;)

From what we have gathered so far, from posts and the KS, and the options listed on the Alpha it seems we will have the following options.

Multi Player Online: - Free for all PvP universe we see and take part in the evolving environment. Lots of players interacting.

Single Player Online: - You play in the live universe, server based, but do not see other players but you do see the changes that are made by other players, within reason.

Multi Player Co - Op: - Similar to MPO but you only have a selected group of people you see and play with.

Single Player Offline: - You play on your own PC only. Only changes you see are the ones you make. You can update your universe with data from the server if you log on and update.

Also remember that you cannot switch back and forth. If you make a character on a single player offline version you cannot move it to the Multiplayer once it gets well equipped etc.

Note: These are subject to change as are all things.

When you say you cannot switch back on forth, do you know whether you can have a SP offline commander as well as a MP online commander. That is, progressing both independently - or will this require the purchase of 2 ED games.

No, it will not.

Off-line and on-line are separate at the character level but the game is not limited to one commander. However you will not be able to play more than one commander at a time.

Yes, you can have 3 avatars per account, and from what I understand they can each be playing in a different online/offline mod from each other, but you can only play one at a time.
