Single player - is it worth it?

I don't want to get embroiled in the whole online/offline debate (although my net connection is on the rubbishy side, I don't mind an online connection), but I did pledge a Kickstarter amount to cover a pre-order when there was a very clear single-player goal stated in the Kickstarter campaign. Has anyone here being playing single-player? If so, is it enjoyable? Are there still missions and such? I'm at the point of requesting a refund but if the game is enjoyable without having to be part of an MMO, then I'll keep the game.

Well if you like being molested every three minutes while you try to get from point A to B, this game is for you. Is it possible for the AI to be a griefer?

Considering the are scattering the player base across the galaxy in Gamma, it is basically a single player game with the rare encounter with a player. So I certainly hope single player is worth it.

WIth a bit of practice you can get away from 9 out of 10 interdictions
So in other words if you average 3.3 interdictions per trip you will die every third trip. Goody.

EDIT: Not counting the "practice" period needed to achieve that ratio.

At the moment the game is not really enjoyable as either, I recommend getting a refund.

All activities that are not combat (trading, mining, exploration, missions) are extremely simplistic and boring, and combat itself, when done for getting credits, is simply a grind.
If you want a comparison, even EVE online has missions that are significantly more interesting.

At the same time, game provides little to no interactions between players, so it's not worth it as an MMO too.

And the only thing that you get for engaging in grinding are credits to buy gear for more efficient grinding.

OP,
I only play Single player online and everything is the same as online multi except for the pvp aspect.

Trading missions, delivery mission, pirate delivery missions and combat/bounty hunting missions are available. As are faction missions.

You can also go explore, mine and visit unknown signatures.

Unlike everyone else so far, I am going to answer your question. Yes, Solo Mode (single player) is worth it. It is identical in almost all ways to Open Mode ( multiplayer), except that there are only you and NPCs in the universe, and it requires much less connectivity/bandwidth. If you read these forums over the last few month you would see that there were/are MANY players who play problem free in solo mode when they were unable to play in open mode because of network problems. Stuttering , dropping, crashing, etc., all went away in solo mode. So even though there is no complete offline mode, solo is the next best thing. It has all the same bells and whistles, just without other players present.;)

Just because you get successfully interdicted, does not automatically mean death. You can still, give up your cargo, fight your way out, dodge and weave until you can re-enter supercruise. I have been interdicted 10 or 12 times. Only failed to get away once, and I killed that fool. So your calculations are baloney. :p

I usually only play SOLO mode and enjoy it. There are missions, enough stuff to trade and kill and markets are obviously changing due to other player interaction. For me there is no point in MP right now since there are no MP-tools whatsoever that would make it worthwhile (chat, coop actions with loot/reward sharing, clans/guilds...) and a lot more network issues/lags/bugs.

OP - yes. It's just the same as online/group play but no humans. A lot more will be added for final release.

Every iteration we've had doomsayers saying 'is that it?' and each iteration has had more added.

I'm not sure if people are being willingly ignorant about the concept of pre-release gaming. I don't understand them tbh.

from my pov: yes, the single player online mode is definitly enjoyable. That doesnt mean there are no issues with it, like the previously mentioned overboading interdictions, but i theese things will get adjusted.

Currently the NPCs don't care if you have cargo or not. They are just psychopaths that want to blow up your ship. Not make money.

Well I have just played a good 4 hours and I got interdicted only 3 times and only once successfully (I actually submitted myself to the interdiction on purpose by turning off the gas). In the one time where it was successful, I managed to restart super cruise quickly enough to escape without my shield going down in the first place. So you may have been unlucky...
Oh and during these 4 hours, I didn't just sit around one area. I have traded, I have done exploration, I have done missions. I even tried bounty hunting until I realized that my guns were not big enough to easily take out my target so I quickly jumped away to avoid being destroyed.
Elite has always been extremely difficult in the first place. I remember my first encounter with an enemy in Elite 2 and got blown up extremely quickly: very frustrating and yet very rewarding once you understand how it works.
I am extremely happy about the solo system as it feels exactly like Elite 2 and 3 (which are the one I played in the past). As for content, again, I am pretty happy as it matches what I have been doing in many space sims in the past and it stays very elite. Open World games always have that kind of feeling in the first place.

It all depends on what you want out of the game, I've played in the open play, group play, and solo, and there's no difference in content. remember this game is going to evolve even after release. I too have a very poor internet connection so tend to play solo because of the graphics stutter and server drop out. I would prefer to play in open because I like the interaction with other players. But saying that I find I get just as engrossed in the solo play to worry about it. keep at it you'll learn to love it ;)

This exactly how i feel
