Single player - recon wing - too hard?

If the rest of the game is as hard as this level I may as well give up now.

I manage to kill 1 ship then its game over as they all attack me and in seconds I'm dead

Feel like I've just wasted £100

Welcome to the forums. Don't give up yet, you can get there with a bit of practice. Honest. I was rubbish, first thing I did was hit an asteroid. Now I'm less rubbish but can get through most of the scenarios.

Luckily combat is only a small part of the final game, and probably will be less in the beta as and when it drops.

Remember - you're going to be testing, not just playing too.

DON'T PANIC!

There is a pretty steep learning curve but it does get easier with a few hours' practice :).

One handy hint for that level is to use your missiles with gusto and abandon... they will seek out the target once you get a lock on

Oh and welcome to the forums :)

Hard? Did it on the first try and I was hoping for more! Try to choose a wise moment to attack, position yourself, and do zoom and boom tactics, you're faster than them... and smarter.

You've got 12 missiles, 4 ships. 3 missiles is only just short of killing them.

The laser is gimbaled so that helps.

They start off not agro to you, so get in close to the first one before firing. Make sure you're behind and he's not about to dart off screen.

Get a missile lock.

Fire 3 missiles and then finish off with lasers.

Rinse and repeat :)

They actually upped the difficulty of that one in a later alpha IIRC. Originally, which might be what you have, they spawn together, now they come from all directions.

I think, it's a mission that can teach you something: patience and preperation.

There is no need to attack them as soon as they arrive, keep calm. Let them choose their direction, follow them a while at firing distance. Choose a target, wait for missile lock, configure your energy system (i do for weapon energy).

If they are in a position you like (you on six), fire some laser shots on your target (you will get a feeling for how many it takes) and give him three missiles. Quickly change target and repeat.

Now you're down to two enemies...this you should be able to handle with a little practice.
Most problems I encountered by myself, with any mission, were solved by practicing, learning, patience...and proper input devices.

Energy management is often a key factor in combat encounters.
Since i'm getting old and can barely remember all the buttons (or even mess around with them while trying to keep aim), i now use "VoiceAttack" for this purpose.
Takes a while to find the right keywords though...not every curse while playing should change the energy setup...

Don't rush in, they will seperate a bit I usually take the last two to come out first then the other 2. As some one else said missiles are your friend, lower the shields a bit and then 3 missiles each should take them out.

Also don't be afried to do the earlier missions lots till they are very easy, each one is menat to introduce you to different tactics, stay with it you'll get it in the end :)

Some good tactics here.

You can check my post in another thread describing one of the possible strategies:

It is one of those scenarios that is simple enough when you get the knack of it but will turn around and bite you hard if you mess up.

First thing to remember is that they won't attack you until you start shooting. use this to get behind the fighter wing. Target Farrago Four first, get reasonably close maybe ~1000m before shooting, make sure that your sight has locked on first. A few quick bursts of laser fire from you will start to take down his shields. When you get the tone for missile lock, fire 3 missiles in quick succession. It might be an idea to stop firing the laser while the missiles find their target as you don't want to destroy your own missiles by mistake. Your target should now be destroyed, if he still has a few % left, finish him with your laser

Now get the next fighter in your sights, lasers, tone, 3 missiles, finish off with laser if required, rinse and repeat for the remaining fighters.

That was impressive

There are a few impressive times on the leaderboard can you beat them? (Not directed at you Bikky :D)
if you have access to the PBF (you should if you have Alpha/P-Beta) .. come and join in the fun ... HERE

Sorry shameless plug for my thread

But it could give you some ideas on attacking foe's (not my attempts ... ignore those :)) I know I have learned a thing or two.

Welcome Mojonaut. That mission can indeed be quite tricky, as people have said it will take some time and practice. You'll get the hang of it. :)

I tend to find one on one isn't a problem, once you have multiple ships gunning for you it gets an awful lot harder. After a lot of trying I have managed to solve that mission - basically by the same approach suggested by many already. Just need to keep practicing on later missions.

Bear in mind that Elite isn't only about combat, just helps if you can protect yourself....

Wow I thought this mission was too easy I retried just in case they made it harder , but still seams fairly easy remember you are their to ambush the recon wing .
Head for the jump point as fast as possible and lock and fire at the first fighter as soon as the shields start to fail give it two missiles bang .
You then only have three ships to fight make sure you even out the power I prefer only 1 pip in engines and share the rest with shields and guns then target the closest hostile start shooting at it when the shields fail give it at least 1 missile bang . You will now only have to out fly the last 2 fighters .

Thanks for the advice and not slamming me guys - appreciated

I reached 'Elite' on the original BBC Micro so maybe my age is showing and I just don't have the lightning quick reactions I once had.

Maybe the developers could take on board there is a wide age spread with differing abilities.

I could open a trinket shop on Zelada maybe. :D

My strategy is to take down as much (if possible all) of their shields with the laser, get lock on tone with missiles, fire 2-3 of them, and move on to the next one ASAP. Keep moving; if you get attacked from behind while hammering a target break off and go again.
