Single player

I say this pretty much everywhere I go, I just don't go to these forums very often (or play the game anymore really for now):

Give me single player with modding. Give me Skyrim in space. I'll pay $100-$150 for that if the game is good. I paid $300 or hatever it was for the alpha to E:D after all.

Not meaning to gripe about single player not being in the game, not meaning to antagonize, just saying there is a market for that and everyone's just selling multiplayer stuff to people who don't really care for it but have no better alternatives. Bethesda might grab that cake with Starfield. Egosoft might actually make X series great again. But really E:D / FFE / Elite 2 Frontier are more my kinds of games. It just needs to be more gamey and with mods to make the experience deep and satisfying.

Rambling off, peace.

Single player is in the game. it is called solo.. and as for modding that would have to be a completely different game.

Try Freelancer
It's old but has some great mods to use at https://www.the-starport.net
For me it's still an old favorite
also can see at moddb.com under Freelancer Mods

Try it :)

I second this suggestion. I played Freelancer to absolute death back in the summer of 2003. I remember when it came out it was heralded as the new Elite and on the whole I agreed back then. Admittedly old Dave Brabben had already been banging away about a persistent networked Elite for at least four years by that point. It sounded like a good idea at the time, shame how it worked out! In comparison Freelancer was very definitely single player but offered a real story and a big game world. I enjoyed it hugely. Once I'd worn the wheels off I migrated to Freespace I&II, but honestly still preferred Freelancer. I then played a good few mods in 2005 and particularly enjoyed the one with house fusion beams!

If you have a tolerance for low-fi graphics then you might want to give Privateer II a look over as well if you haven't already. It was a pretty sound game for Christmas 1996, despite squandering a stellar cast in terrible FMV cut-scenes. I think there are mods for it and the whole thing runs very nicely in DOSBox.

I really enjoyed the Bruce Campbell-voiced 'Tachyon' as well, although I picked it up as again a potential replacement for Freelancer. It kind of bridges the gap between that game and Freespace.

Finally, if you are on a console you might want to try 'Everspace'. It is supposedly the spiritual successor to Freelancer and looks pretty nice. I only picked it up the other day and gave it a very brief spin as it was on sale for XBox. For all I know it may even be available for PC as well.

Commander Morelenmir
Yes Freelancer is good and i also played the heck out of it LOL. Freespace great game , Privateer as well. You know I hope all these lucky game builders realize we just want are old games back but with better graphics and story (Role Play). Mods we be great too. Well nice talking with you Morelenmir :)

Hey Bryan!

Not logged in here for quite a while so I'm sorry I missed your comment. Yeah, they were classic games. I have always said that 'Mass Effect' was 'Witcher in Space', I just wish there was a Witcher-in-a-cockpit game as well!

I also kind of wish I had got in to the 'Wing Commander' titles when they were new. I only caught the very last one, the entry that was distributed episodically and perhaps free? I cannot properly recall now but I think it would have been late 1998? It was pretty good I guess but I never really made a proper connection to that whole series.

Another title that I think is criminally underrated and almost unknown is 'Dark Star One'. That really is an RPG in space, although a bit loose around the edges its certainly worth a look too. The 'evolving' ship mechanic was unique with a lot of gameplay associated. I always hoped there would be a sequel.

Finally the OP night want to look at the 'Descent' franchise. They are not really space-sims per-se but they certainly do have something, especially the second. I keep hearing a fourth entry might finally be released but its been a long time coming...!!!
