Six minutes? SIX minutes!

Dear Frontier

Despite the largely negative comment cloud surrounding Odyssey, I am having a wonderful time with it. Really, I'm properly playing for hours on end and having a ball. I'm stressing this here because (inevitably) I'm going to complain.

So here goes... I love the variety and number of missions. I love that they are challenging enough that you don't win every time - this makes it feel even better when you do succeed. I love that if you do something stupid or careless, the game will punish you for it - a good way to learn to git gud. I love that you made a keybind for 'erase scanned profile' - on hearing the 'stand for a scan commander' when not expecting it, I have just enough time to recognise the peril and clear my crime (saved my bacon twice today). I love almost everything about the game...

But six minutes... really?

I entered a hab yesterday evening and found a data port, grabbed the 5 slots and started downloading. And noticed that the time read 360 - 360 seconds, aka 6 minutes.

Is that really a decision someone at Frontier took? "I know - if they get a certain RNGesus roll, we'll have them do nothing for 6 minutes, because, y'know - gameplay..."

Of course in 3307 you would hope that their 'space wifi' would be better than ours today. Because if they had proper wifi we could wander a hab doing other gameplay while our data downloaded. I don't mind waiting six minutes for a download if I can be doing other things that not straying more than 15 feet from the data port.

Oh, and I wasn't going to raise this as a solo issue, but since I'm here... this cap on the total amount of on foot materials is already hurting. I'm 'full' so cant pick anything else up until someone posts a list saying what is definitely not useful for engineering suits or weapons and then I can dump it. So please either remove this (artificial) limit or greatly raise it. I hate juggling inventory in any game - that's not gameplay, particularly if you don't know what you're hanging onto is useful in any way.

I LOVE your game Fdev, but lets make it even better, ok?

How do you expect they'll keep people's playtime high? Time waste and grind are core aspects of Elite's game design. Almost everything is slower than it could be.

6 minutes is the average cat meme montage video on YouTube perhaps?

Each bit of data has different dl time. If you don't think it's worth the effort to get them, leave them off the list. Except for the few things that engies need most of it is junk. You can't be that hard up for cash? You can also do other things while it's dl'ing, provided you're in range of course.

Yep, as others have said, if you try to download half a dozen, it could take an boring amount of time - you just have to learn which ones are worth anything in credits or for banking to unlock engineers or a specific mission. Don't download them all.

Discovered this recently. The 1000 cap is not hard to reach or stay at once you hit a certain point. Use the bartender to trade often.
Trade for the high value items. ( high value as in what the trader wants/gives for them ) Keep a lmiited number of low value items 10-15 and replenish those as needed. trade the rest for high value items like carbon fiber, titanium, graphene. This should keep your Total / 1000 low enough to keep on collecting to the point where you just dont pick half the stuff up anymore because room. But with continued trading you always have stacks of high value stuff to trade down as needed.

Doing this I quickly found that materials were not really an issue, its the data that mostly is the bottleneck for gear. So take missions for the data rewards. Make a list of data types for engineering. I have found that MOST of the 'engineering data' is fast download time, like 5-10s. Not everything, but most of it. I dont find myself standing around for more than a minute tops now that I have a list to filter out the junk.
