Skills or anything quite like it?

I like my RPGs but I'm 100% glad that there are no "skills" in ED. It's not that kind of game.
yes, that. E D is many things. it has no RPG elements.

no upleveling yourself so the same action has more consequences.

you level rep, engineers, ranks to get more access to something. credits and engineers define your ship.

but skills for piloting or using ingame or 3rd party tools for beeing effective ingame is solely a real and OOC skill to develop.

Yeah, same here. The rank grind is more of a nuisance than a meaningful, satisfying progression of your pilot career, and it doesn't even make logical sense either.

Your skill in the game is the skill you gain by doing a thing a lot.
you learn for real, and you progress in rank. Getting an elite rank in combat today is probably more difficult than it was 4 years ago.

Elite's skill and ability system is entirely equipment based. The rest is player skill. They're going the same way with Odyssey.

True, but access to faction controlled ships and modules is another story. As demonstrated by faction rank locked ships, modules and permits.
True, faction ships can just be gained by doing simple missions... Never even breaking a sweat, or even having to fire a single shot...
Pretty much the same as everything else in the game, if you hit the magic number, bing! Progress...
Even combat elite is just making the correct number of 'kills', doesn't mean the player is an ace, just "made the number' 🤷‍♂️

All the 'progress' in the game comes down to 'as many as needed' - there are even guides how to 'cheese' material gathering by multiple re-logging, would changes to any of the 'progress' in the game to make it 'harder' be gleefully accepted?

As expected, most of the suggestions made to 'toughen up' something are made by those who no longer need to - not that I am suggesting the contributions here might be the same, or anything ;)
