Engineers Skimmer destruction mission, is there something I do wrong?

So here it is, I've been playing ED since Beta but recently came back to try the Engineers update (but not the engineers themselves, they are too far for my Eagle)

I took a Skimmer destruction mission for some serious credits, destroy 2 of them at some base in a nearby system. Easy peasy I told myself, I am a renowned SRV driver (not really). So, I get there, land near the outpost, spot the 2 skimmers I need to destroy and start opening fire. All hell then break loose and I get shot to hell and back by all of the base and manage to flee with 3% hull left on the SRV and a big fine for some reason. I then decide to try something else, I get my Eagle above the base and shoot the skimmers from there, I thought I was being smart but I just ended up with a bigger fine and no Skimmer kills I needed.

You can pimp out your ship and upgrade it, but not the SRV so there must be something I myself do wrong. Was I supposed to attack those Skimmers or was there something I had to do to prevent all of the base to want to vaporize me? I ended up cancelling the mission but I am curious as to how I should approach those kind of missions. I drive an Imperial Eagle by the way and my bank balance is around a million credits.

Thanks.

You don't actually have to go to the base. POI's in the vicinity of the base will be the same type of skimmer so just go find a crash spot nearby, nuke those skimmers (ensure they're mission targets first) and then collect whatever they were guarding. This has the added advantage that those skimmers are more likely to be both mission targets *and* wanted. The base skimmers are rarely wanted so you get a fine for killing them.

yes, you doing it wrong.
only small defence turrets will shoot you. destroy the turrets in the area near skimmers then shoot the skimmers.

I blindly followed the mission text but what you say makes more sense than attacking a base head on. Thanks, I'll give it a go tonight.

I did the same till I said screw this and wandered off to find yttrium. Ran across a POI with skimmers and was pleasantly suprised to see they were mission targets. Since then that's been pretty much my model for doing them. 1.5M CR mission to kill 6 skimmers last night, got about 80K in random goods at the same time though that's not nearly as interesting with those huge payouts.

All I really wanted was the security firmware patch reward but I took the 1.5M anyway.

But how do I find POI's? Every planet i go to is barren except for the bases. Am I missing a module on my ship or something?

Either by flying with the ship above 2 km and scanner range zoomed all out (blue circles indicate one)
or by driving in the SRV, where the top line on the wave scanner indicates technology.
Zooming the scanner out on the SRV helps as well as you will see trespass zones on it.

edit: also as far as logic goes I think bases are official allowed/sanctioned settlements - thus attacking anything there gets you a bounty - but off site skimmer operations are illicit, thus they are wanted/fair game

Thanks YinYin, it just so happens I have an active skimmer mission, so I'll do some 2km flying and see what I can see.
