Proposal Discussion Skins/paints - floating an idea - devs?

Hi everyone,

This is only my third post but I think iI might have something to contribute here.

I am in fact quite happy to pay RL cash for in game cosmetic type items, but nothing that amounts to P2W. That would, for me at least, be a deal breaker.

However having been a "painter" as well as a racer in the xbox forza motorsport game series, where it is a major free aspect of many peoples gaming experience, i have given it a fair bit of thought over the years. In fact it is all some people do in Forza.

So with that background I see the following as key points for any paid for skin/paint system

1. The ability for the player to design and use their own skins/paints.
2. For FD to make profit from this to ensure a healthy business and continuing support and development for ED and beyond.

To achieve this

1. FD could release a paint editor in the same sort of style as Forza, or through simple flat surface templates.
2. The player uses this to design their skin/paint, given clear content/design rules eg no references to sex, racism etc.
3. For a RL cash fee (non refundable - read the content/design rules to avoid disappointment) the player/designer submits this to FD moderation.
4. On approval the design becomes unlocked and you can use it freely on your ships.
5. FD generated skins are sold for RL cash in the normal way, at perhaps a lower pricepoint.

The software/business mechanics of this may be complex, I have no idea.

The advantages though, are many, and not only open up a fair cash generator method for FD, but give players some ownership of this aspect of the game.

I'd be very happy to pay £5 to £7 for a quality paint I created, rather than some paint everyone else is applying to their ship.

Other considerations?

Can players who design a skin sell it in an FD in game market place for a few in game royalty credits with a small RL cash fee going to FD?

Your thoughts welcome, but the devs should give such a model some thought.

If you think the ability to customise your ship graphically is not something you want, please add those thoughts to another thread. There are a few of those already.

Apologies if this should be posted elsewhere.

Cheers

Fwiw, I rather like your ideas. I suppose prospective paint-jobs would have to be moderated to deal with adverts and possibly obscene artwork.

Personally, rather than camo-jobs I'd be interested in something lurid and bright (Day-Glo) to ward-off dozy commanders who might otherwise not see my ship at the station orifice…

And how about 'bumper' stickers too? 'My Other Ship's a Millennium Falcon' perhaps? :)

It's not the first time that ideas like this have been proposed. Personally I'm all for it. My understanding is that FD are not averse either, but lack the resources to provide such a facility in time for the first release.

After that, who knows?

I actually quite like this idea, it sort of depends if there is enough demand and if the income it provides outweighs the cost of getting someone to moderate and administer the designs.

I'd also expect it to have a higher premium than the premium FD produced skins.

I also wonder if theres issues propogating/rendering individual designs of multiple ships through the peer to peer system. This might be the most limiting technical obstacle.

However if all these things work, i think it would add a lot of variety to the galaxy.

Tiers (of the sun)

Hi all,

I actually posted another solution in another thread but it got drowned out by all the "MT is bad-booo" vs "no it isn't" panto to and fro.

My idea was adapted from the RTS space game Homeworld from circa 1998.

Tier one - this would be free

The skin of your ship would be made of sheet metal patches and borders. These can be coloured to create a two tone effect. This can be done on a colour wheel, so essentially an infinite number of combos can be created. BUT you would be restricted to the set template for that ship type. This would be FREE IRL, but cost in-game credits at the paint shop.

Tier two - IRL money

Would involve any variation of supplied paint jobs and or custom work by the community. monetised at varying levels for those that want it.

Cheers,

GC

Absolutely. Getting the right moderation criteria, mechanism and staff to apply them is the big thing here. I don't see it as insurmountable though. No need for a department based at the FD HQ. Can all be farmed out online.

I really like the TIER 1 suggestion in the last post, as one way of offering easily controllable player outcomes without the need for moderating everything. Perhaps with the ability to purchase a range of standard vinyls that can be applied and positioned on top of the base skin.

The player created ones are a much more difficult beast to manage.

Look at the following links. They show the Forza system. You can only create paints using primitive shapes. It's genuinely creative. Takes a bit of skill, but it's surprising what can be achieved with a basic understanding. The real benefit as I see it is that by excluding imported jpegs etc you massively reduce copyright issues.

I really like the OP idea. Was discussing something very similar with my friend today. Rather than generic skins that everyone will use, I'd LOVE to see some kind of editor to allow me to apply my own design to my ship.

Good base for a solution for you there in the OP, FDEV!
