Sigh...
Most of my issues with graphics and crashing seemed to be resolved with the 1.1 release.
I was happy to see that the visible skybox seam slicing across my view of the galaxy was fixed!!!
...and then today, a new hotfix apparently, click the update button. The skybox seam is back.
