Slaving - just wrong?

Is it just me or are others avoiding the slave trade for ethical reasons?

I could make fast credits, it is just a game - but in my head I would not want my CMDR persona to be that sort of guy.

Maybe I need to start fighting against it. Could slaves be liberated from their slave ships?

I fail to see anything wrong with the slave trade. I do it for humanitarian reasons, you know, freeing slaves for a small fee that should cover my fuel and fines.

Right and wrong being purely subjective terms, I always dismiss the assertion that anything is "just wrong". It's not an argument, it's a statement of unreasoning moral outrage.

That said, I'm sure most people do a variety of things for moral reasons, whatever those morals may be.

It's not just you, I feel the same. I know it's just a game but can't bring myself to trade in slavery - even if they are Imperial Slaves and have "voluntarily" sold themselves into slavery.

I can't help wondering how they are able to sell slaves by the ton and cram them into a regular cargo canister. This surely constitutes an additional human rights abuse. Also slavery is one of the main reasons I'm actively siding against the Empire. So far have I have avoided trading slaves. However, the ethics become less clear if you find floating canisters of slaves. I.E. keeping the slaves alive at least means they will one day have a chance of freedom and seems far more ethical then leaving them to float in space.

I think it would be great if Frontier offered the option to free slaves on the commodities / black market. I.E. allow commanders to scoop slaves and free them. Slave should certainly be treated as qualitatively different from regular commodities.

I never dabble with slaves. I do pick them up if i see their cans and know a black market..... logic being, better a slave and alive than dead.

I really hope in the future we get game mechanics to allow us to scoop said cans and then free them, complete with chances of unique missions etc coming from it.

Now imperial slaves on the other hand, I see no issue with them, much like prostitution I see it as its their bodies and if they want to sign up for it, with an end date set and certain life standards maintained then I am ok with it.

Presumably from your statement you feel that 'unreasoning moral outrage' is wrong?

If the money has been good I have traded in slaves. Have to go where the profit is after all.

Plus, I cant turn down a job buying 2 slaves for 45K in a station that sells them at 10K each. That's more than enough to entice me into the slave trade.

Personally I'm all for helping get those deadbeats security & life-long full-time employment.

Especially if I earn a tasty fee for the effort.

I do miss the Frontier thing of transporting slaves, forgetting to sort Cargo bay life support...and ending up with animal meat or fertiliser..heh heh

Maybe a coincidence but this seemed fixed for me last night. All the imperial slave missions I saw were when there was no "stock" at the station.

Morality and ethics in online games is a fascinating subject :)

Morality in any scenario is an interesting one.

person A may say imperial slaves are "morally" wrong, and to bring in what I mentioned in my last post, some people say pornography or prostitution is morally wrong, and it is the moral duty of a government to ban such things.

I on the other hand think it is morally wrong for state (or worse still church) to tell a person that what decisions they make to do with their own life or body are wrong, so long as it does not affect anyone else and they are an adult and of sound mind.

(it was not so long ago that certain ignorant people thought it was morally wrong for same sex couples (sadly some still do think that way) or for women to have certain careers in religion or that it was morally ok to think that some races of people were subhuman)

I hope that in 1000 years time such things will be moot.

Its a game, they arn't really slaves.

A tonne of fat slaves should have a much lower value than a tonne of athletically built slaves, unless of course your intended final use of the slaves was for other purposes than work.
