Slaving - just wrong?

It's only a game ... I killed so many people with a giant pink sex toy in Saints row .. ethical .. probably not xD

I do it to make money.

IRL I am definitely not a bad guy who thinks slavery is cool, I just do it because in the ethics of the game, while slavery is clearly still unethical, some wildcat trader out in the middle of nowhere who needs to make some money and is looking for the next score to tide them over would definitely not be looking at these decisions in a vacuum like we are - I think the ethics behind this in 3000 AD space are murkier than they are for us in 2015 Western Europe/USA and as such, my in game persona, while still not being for slavery, might partake in the trade because he needs to.

Those who are complicit, condone. If you deal in them, in any other capacity than to free them, then you support slavery, period. I believe moral gray areas do exist, but this is pretty black and white.

Two topical quotes from Abraham Lincoln on the subject:

"As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy."

"This is a world of compensations; and he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave."

What would you truly do, if put in the circumstances of the character you roleplay? Would you really traffic in human bondage, of any kind? What decent man would?

I have no problem differentiating between reality and a computer game. No moral question exists, it's just a game.
Most people are role playing.
I loathe any character in the game that deals in slaves, but have nothing against that character's player. That's the difference between the game and reality.

Seriously??!!
I work at Red Cross Australia in the Migration Support Program. Specifically my team and I work with those that have been trafficked to the country for slavery. Predominantly this is for sex slavery. It's a cruel business that takes an emotional toll on me and my coworkers. This toll is insignificant when compared to the emotional and physical abuse our clients have gone through.

That said, I trade the crap outta slaves in ED without blinking. It's a game. If my consciounce ever mirrored my "gaming consciounce" then I never would have picked up a gamepad. You guys murder people in cold blood everyday in games.

Your flying in space, pinging between suns and you find slavery a stretch??

Now remembering the time I accidentally jettisoned 32T of imperial slaves inside a starport. Managed to scoop up a few of them before they all got stuck in the machinery around the perim- uhhh, floor? of the station.
I sometimes wonder if any of the ones I couldn't scoop managed to free themselves and are living on that station as refugees now. I wonder what they'd say to my character if they ran into him down the line.
Probably something like "now I can't repay my debt and my family back home are going to suffer, thanks a-hole, I was happier in stasis in your cargo bay"

Is it just me or are others avoiding the slave trade for ethical reasons?

I could make fast credits, it is just a game - but in my head I would not want my CMDR persona to be that sort of guy.

Maybe I need to start fighting against it. Could slaves be liberated from their slave ships?

Me too, even though i've succumbed to a few of the deliver slaves missions..

One thing I do miss is the inability to scoop up escape capsules,

In frontier, you could turn them in to the authorities, gave a nice sense of satisfaction handing over your enemies, rather than simply turning them into space dust

If all you're doing is taking advantage of a gameplay mechanic, for purely out-of-character gameplay ends, like trading slaves as an easy way to grind for a new ship or something, that's one thing. The weirdos on the board who do their damndest to roleplay Calvin Candie, going into huge, disturbingly passionate and nuanced diatribes about how 'imperial slavery' is so ennobling and why it's so great... those are the people who I tend to have a problem with, personally.

In the case of the game, the slaves do not exist. You can not be a slaver if there are no actual slaves.

If you accidentally cause a 'fatality' in game by bumping into another ship, are you guilty of manslaughter?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just not sure you're right.

Lol, what do you think Imperial slaves do?

Professional Seamstress'? ;) The point there is why aren't they called prostitutes then? A moral/ business/ ethical decision by FD.

But I'm not questioning the validity of a game that includes RL illegal activities (or I wouldn't play it), I'm saying the game should have a mechanism to allow moral behaviour if you chose to i.e. the ability to free slaves if you chose to play that way.

Most of the keyboards and phones you guys are typing this noble from were made by factory workers getting paid nothing in disgusting living conditions just so they can live for two more days in poverty before they watch their children die of malnutrition.
If they knew you were moaning about fictional slavery in a video game with the product they slaved to make you, then you just added to their torment. Nice one .

Quoted for truth. Guys run around murdering random space traders for their cargo and then say "Hey, it's unethical to trade slaves." like come on, it's just a game guys, fun to role play but for reals now.

Well, yeah, it's all roleplay ethics, but it's still fun to see where people draw the line. I tend to toe a fairly moral line in games, but I certainly don't think badly of people who don't. It's just a question of what you find most fun.

Personally, I haven't got into slave so far, for entirely (fictitious) ethical reasons. My ethics are being slowly eroded by blasting people out of the sky for parking fines though, and with Federation apparently determined to bore me to death, I may be about to adopt more of a "Hey, lady. I don't ask what's in the boxes" approach.

Of course it is wrong and there is a special place in hell for devs for that.
this place is called throne :D

I think no one here is debating whether other players shouldn't do it or if they should feel bad doing it.
What's honest is that everyone has the freedom (except slaves, eh!) to decide to trade them, sell them or just kill them.

Where's the truth? Surprise, there's no such thing. Just gameplay! Let's just enjoy what we do! :D
