Sleep travel

How about a sort of cryo sleep travel (like in the movies/books) where you select a far off system (which has to have a population and a facility to accept your ship like a safe area in space).

Then you select the station. see the travel time (could be up to two days for furthest travel). Pay the fee to be docked when arrived. And sleep. You could do this when asleep in real life or away from game.

If you come back before the travel is complete and want to play you stop wherever you are (you wont know exactly where) but you lose the fee and are prohibited from using service again for x number of days.

NOTE: this could not be used to take you into deep space as there are no populated systems with the holding facility there to stop at.

Unless there is a reason to do this, the mechanic will be seldom used and would be a waste of effort to code. Could you indicate what is the possible

use of such a tool given that most of the system outside the starter zones does not have stations. Most known destinations with station can be covered

in less than 2 hrs for now.

I was referring to systems outside populated space.. I am currently 2000LY away from nearest colonised system. It will be a long tedious trip back to cash in exploration data. would be nice if i could pick a system pay some credits and come back next day back in populated space.

But I understand where you are coming from re usage and code time. Personally I don't think a lot of code would be required as you would be moved between logout/login. The continuing real time is already in game.

I'm assuming the sleep travel would happen in supercruise? That wouldn't make much sense imo because you'd run out of fuel on your way. If that happens in interstellar space your pretty much screwed ;)

Edit: Also, I'm against everything that would allow progress within the game without actually being logged in to the game...

It would only be fair if you were still venerable to attack whilst travelling. Trouble is then you'd have people complaining that they were destroyed when they weren't even playing.

Only way I'd be on board with this is if it was a means to get a person to a ship they have docked far away. Essentially shoving you in a canister and loading you on a big rig like an Imperial slave =P I don't like the idea of safely, AFK, transferring your entire ship, data, cargo, etc.

Having such system would also guarantee a "safe" way back. Poor pirates, do you want to starve them?

LOL.. If I want a safe way back (and im driving) I just log into solo for the trip back with expensive cargo. That is something that needs fixing.

But why would you travel thousands of LY to get cargo (mining only I suppose). And if you get killed by pirate and you have lots of exploration data you just lose it don't you? Pirate does not get it.

Pirates are not all in Open, I can assure you... My first death was against a NPC (in an old time I didn't know what were interdictions, so how to flee like a coward I am..)

Your suggestion is a guaranteed safe way back - that's why you'll not have it in a near future. Not because I decided it, my voice has no importance there, but because that's what I understood of Elite "spirit". Maybe in the future, though, if they choose to make it more casual-friendly - but it will be a different game, then.

this would be neat if:
in the future pockets of civilized space start to appear in remote reaches of the galaxy
which would also be amazing. just saying.
