SLF Canyon Running

CMDRs!

Prepping for DWII and was playing with my SLF in canyons in between Iron and Nickel runs.

How would one go about keeping the mothership safe? As far as I can tell, "follow me" is always "reded out" and that probably wouldn't be a great choice for my Beluga anyways. (Tried to research why it was always red, and no luck. So if you have insight on that let me know.)

I don't want to worry about running out of range but I also don't want to have my "expert" copilot run into the side of the canyon and drop the hull to 65% while I'm in between Sag A and Beagle Point like she just did.

So, what solutions for preventing the NPC from being stupid while you stupidly smash your SLF into the side of the canyon have you come up with?

I don't think there is a solution to this problem. At least I haven't found one. It really needs FD to introduce more intelligent AI with the pilot of the mother ship in order to avoid collision with the ground even if you, in the SLF, are beneath it in a valley.

What’s the distance on Hold Position?
I’m planning on bringing an SLF also.

I figured I’d be social and allow another CMDR to use it for some canyon runs if they like.

I dont see why our ship can’t be dismissed while in a fighter just like the SRV.

If I recall correct you can't have the mother ship follow you, it works only the other way around. "Maintain Formation" is the equivalent of "Follow Me" when piloting the SLF yourself, or else the mother ship won't try to stick with you after giving it the "Hold Position" command. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, there ain't many options to be honest. If we talk about keeping the mother ship safe around rough canyon terrain, then the "Hold Position" command is the ultimate choice, you can't go wrong with it. The downside is the ridiculous 30 km range cap. I have never understood why it's such short distance. Every single time I fly a fighter in exotic locations I'm stressed out, and only because of the maximum range cap. I can never fully immerse myself of being free and explore because I have to look at the range literally every 10 seconds when boosting away. Now, imagine if range cap was 200 km - or better yet, no cap at all.
