SLF crew cost question

I have NPC crew that I hired as Harmless, and is now 30% towards Dangerous. She is getting quite good now. Lost 6 fighters in all.

Total cost to me so far is about 25MCr, which is not huge, but I noticed that it is actually more than my lifetime expenses over 2½ years for repairs, fuel, munitions and fines - combined.
Given that most of the 25MCr has come with no input from the crew member whatsoever, my question is:

What is the given gameplay reason for retaining crew on full pay when inactive?

They should be like Post Captains in the old British navy. The were put on half pay or less when they weren't active between wars.

If we could actually see them in the cockpit that would help justify the cost perhaps, But ya for those rates they should be warming your bunk also :)

Thanks. Was there any official comment?
Its hard to understand on the face of it, so there must be a game play reason ??

They essentially just said "they get paid full no matter what." Likely for balance reasons.

Personally I could see them getting some pay while off duty from a realism standpoint, because you are essentially hiring them and want them to be on call on a moments notice. However, getting a full wage is way too much. Off duty SLF crew should get 1-2% depending on rank. 1-2% is a small amount to the players, 10-20k per 1 million earned, which on most of the ships that can fit SLFs, they are making several million per hour. In game, a literal ton of meat can cost as little as 1.5k, so getting 80-160k (10-20k/hr x 8hr), enough to buy their own ship, for sitting on a couch for a typical work day would seem like a pretty great offer to me

So you hire a pilot and then don't want that pilot to earn money? Sounds just like today's America to me... ;)

Jokes aside: I am not even going to tell you what my pilot has earned since I hired her, but she is 30% away from Deadly right now; you do the math.

Do you have a source? Thanks.

For the record, I am not advocating denial of payment for off duty crew, but feel a reduction compared with active duty would be reasonable. Would love to know the designers thinking here.
