Slightly frustrated and would love some advice on getting to points of interest.

Got near Sol but don't have a permit. I know I need federation standing but how does one go about getting this? Bulletin boards seem to have nothing for federation quests no matter which system I'm in. Each system seems to only have quests specific to that system's faction.
This is very frustrating because almost every major point of interest I've come to (Sol, Vega, Alpha Centauri) all need a license to travel to! It really puts a damper on trying to travel "anywhere you want to go in our galaxy". 400 billion systems except for the large, interesting percentage which require licenses!!!

Happy to entertain ideas. Maybe I'm just going about it all wrong. Can't seem to pick a faction unless I'm in a combat zone? But in all my travels (well over 50 systems now) have yet to see a combat zone.

Just keep at it, doing mssions, trading, killing baddies. You will be noticed and rewarded, but it takes a while. My Sol permit was the second to be offered to me in-game (as a Beta backer I already had one though). Missions get you brownie points with the local faction and, it seems, the relevant major political group. Just keep at it.

Do missions for local factions who are part of the Federation. That will get you rep with them I think.
