Slopeys Tool lost me money

I blew up my ship because it was accidentally on silent running, and I didn't know it. By the time I realized it must be on silent, I didn't know the key to turn it off and it was to late. I lost a loaded sidewinder. So I sold a couple of cargo bays, and bought 1 ton that should have made me 801. The buy price from Slopeys Tool was accurate, but the sell price was off, and I lost 27 credits on my ton. I've feel like my Elite career is cursed, because I had several deaths, losing data in my scanning days (the last few days), and wondering around until I thought this tool would turn the tide for me. No wonder they call it Dangerous. Any advise?

Slopey's tool is only as accurate as the last person who added data for that system. It isn't magical; you need to update it with correct pricing (which changes all the time) to get accurate reads from it.

You can always clear your game. But honestly, the best advice that I can give you is not to rely on others. The only one that you can rely on is yourself. Oh, and learn the controls of the game and learn how to fly - spend a few days just flying about, getting used to ship controls, combat, docking, etc..

Also consider running courier missions, as these won't fluctuate based on market prices: you get a fixed income off moving someone elses cargo.

Any advise?

First play this game while trying things out. Don't focus on making money or a career, just try things. When you're ready wipe your save game and play it for real.

If your ship is on silent running and you don't know it you obviously have no control over your ship. ED is dangerous, yes. Yesterday I entered a star port without asking for docking clearance. I made a simple mistake that could have cost me a lot of credits, I got away with a fine. There are no second chances in this game, you must understand your ship + controls + functions + readings, and the mechanics of the outside world.

I understand prices fluctuate in real life, but this is not sustainable. In a game where there are billions of locations it's hard enough to find your way around this game, without unrealistic changes. How can slopey's tool possibly stay current with so many locations? I've only heard people say it's great, so I don't get it. Just a bit discouraged.

I'm not the best at flying, but I'm ok. I just never used silent running, and didn't realize it's practically a self destruct button. I must have hit it when pressing "control alt delete" to close the game window while docked, then exploded almost as soon as I left the station.

As I said, Slopey's tool is a "you get what you put into it" kind of deal.

If you want the route calculator to give you the optimal pricing, you need up-to-date data.

Slopey's is not an I-Win button for trading - it is basically a crowd-sourced tool for gathering data (accuracy can vary with time or bad data entered) and more importantly, it calculates optimal trades from input price data. To use it best, go to a station, put in the current prices, go to nearby stations, put in those prices, THEN run the calculator and see what the best route is. Run that route into the ground, rinse, repeat.

Please don't bait each other. It's Christmas for much of the world, a time for peace and reconciliation.

If you think a post is trolling, best advice is not to post and bump it up the forum list.

Merry CHristmas.

and even then it's just an educated guess, nothing more

Ok so I checked and my mineral was the only one that was mispriced at that dock, so I changed it on the tool. I was able to go to another station in that system and get that price though, so it's working for me. I also took a mission to find something and come back and sell it. I used the tool to find what I needed in the same system I'm trading with. Thanks!

Trading profit is made at the buy - how much under galactic average is the selling price. After that, if the import world is paying more than average, that's just a bonus. Otherwise you have to choose do I dump the current cargo for a small loss because I know I can make more on an export commodity here, or do I keep going and look for a market that sis buying for over market average. Oh and in systems with multiple stations each has it's own commodity market - sometimes it's possible to find fair trade profit without even leaving your current system.
