Engineers Slot Machine Engineering

Hi: in game 1,600 hrs. The engineering was interesting until I hit the "slot machine". Lots of grinding for mats, etc just to "pull the handle" and get nothing. I like the slider model seen on Obsidian Ants vid. This needs a rework for engineering to be viable for me. Sure greefers us exploits to GodMod their ships to bushwack and backstab noobs. Oh what fun[down]

I expeditiously digress but like they say in China; the bush with fire, woman slapped with moist staff. So yeah! and no to be quite clear

You only need a few rolls for each mod to get something decent. If you want great rolls, you've got to put in more effort.

Over time the randomness averages out. The RNG component of engineering is absolutely fine as long as you set realistic expectations.

I agree. The true nature of Engineers is in the COMBINATION OF MODS you add across modules, giving your ship a unique set up. Saving weight on FSD and sensors so you can have a heavier, more armoured powerplant, for one example. And if you want to know exactly what you're going to get, go to a ship outfitting; Tolerances (and unpredictability) are a thing, especially in experimental and even more so in extreme engineering. Just be glad your FSD doesn't spit its guts out ...

I agree, that as long as you set realistic expectations, that 'upgrading' with the RNG is absolutely fine; boring but fine.

What is not fine about the RNG, is when you want to make something more creative - like tuning down your OC lasers power consumption at the expense of damage to stay within your ships power limit; in that scenario you're screwed. You are better off just re-rolling again and again until you get an OC power plant with a god tier reduction on heat. It breaks my heart.

....OP duped these threads btw. And he hasn't even come back, such a scoundrel.

^ This!!!

Gunnet nailed it. Also remember that you can apply a decent module and continue with rolling the dice. This way you'll at least end up with something good instead of nothing. If you happen to roll a better modification, just apply it over the last one. Striving for perfection is pointless.
