Sloth is the most wanted animal!

So many people speculate about frontier picking the most wanted animal from the wishlist for the next DLC, which is the Tasmanian Devil right now. However because the votes for the Sloth is divided by 5 subspecies the Sloth is only in 7th position right now. If you combine all 5 subspecies you get 252 votes which is 18 votes more than the Tasmanian Devil. Hence I think the next DLC will contain a Sloth for sure!
So with a Sloth in the pack you get a few options to build a DLC around.

They're not different subspecies... they're species... between two genre...

Genus Bradypus...
  • Brown-Throated Sloth (Bradypus variegatus)
  • Pale-Throated Sloth (Bradypus tridactylus)
  • Maned Sloth (Bradypus torquatus)
  • Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus)
Genus Choloepus...
  • Linnaeus's Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus didactylus)
  • Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni)
Even if you could combine all the votes of the most popular genus (and you can't, only subspecies are merged) you'd only get 179 votes... which at the moment would make it the sixth most popular animal... or, one whole spot higher than the Linnaeus's Sloth currently sits...

They aren't even in the same family. Yes, family.

Humans and orangutans are in the same family, but two and three-toed sloths are not. That's worse than calling orangutans a subspecies of human or vice versa. The sloths look superficially similar because of convergent evolution.

Honestly if they could successfully make the sloth, that would be fantastic. I can see why it's harder than other animals, but after aviary birds, it's the thing I'd be most excited to see them achieve.

Taking aside the differences in taxonomy, I would say that the sloth may be a likely addition with the next pack or two. It's one of the few current habitat-type animals that would be recognizable by the general public, for more sales. Much like the porcupine, people wouldn't necessarily know the species they're looking at, but they'd know the general identity of what they're looking at ie., sloth...porcupine...

There are things holding these two back I think. While the porcupine is more just complexity in detailing the the rig (all the quills would be a pain to design, much less animate), the sloth would have difficulties with synchronizing the time passing in the game to its own animations. I think they could get the mechanics down as far as how it stays in the trees and climbs around, but due to its slowness it would need to have some it's hunger and thirst degrade more slowly. Otherwise it might starve before it could get to the food! On the other hand, they probably have done that with the tortoises, so it's likely not something that can't be done.

If you look at the general animal list (which is comprised of all species of a specific type of animal) then the actual most wanted animal right now is a small cat species.

But I appreciate holding out for an animal you really want :)

General animal list is flawed concept.

One person could vote for few animals from same category therefore boosting number of entire group.
On the other hand there are animals like sloth. Probably no one voted for 2 sloth species, but just one.

For example i once used my 7 votes as joke mentioning only small cat species. (therefore caprid is most requested animal not small cat)

Genuinely hope that if we do get one, we do get a two toed. Having one that’s only held in a single facility across both Europe and North America - the three toed - would be a bit silly.

I do believe they’d work very well in game already though. The mods we have are based off of the Koala and climb very accurately. Of course some changes would be required but I’m confident we could get them working well officially.

“The amount of megafauna which was lost in the Americas at the end of the Pleistocene was Immense. Here are just the sloths that went extinct between 17,000-4,500 years ago! 6 families, at least 22 genera and about 32 species!!! THINK ABOUT THAT!

This is still a WIP. I have been trying to complete this plate when I have time to work on it. It still a long way from being finished but you can get an idea of just the immense scale of what was lost! This is JUST sloths!

There are two Brazilian Late Pleistocene genera for which I couldn’t get exact horizon dating and they MAY need to be included here if they became extinct less than 17,000 years ago

The distribution maps are hypothetical distributions based largely on fossil records (and less so on similar habitats) but these animals likely had larger ranges than what is shown here

In Xibalbaonyx I am including a taxon either conspecific or closely related to that genus found last year in a cave in northern Venezuela” - Gabriel Ugueto Art

Imagine our crazy scientis de-extcint somehow one of these thanks to preserved fur in caves.
If they will be able to pull out mammoth-like species and thylacine in upcoming 6 years people will go nuts.
