Slow Down

Hi, what does the red Slow Down mean?
I get it sometimes when flying towards a stellar body. When it occurs it seems my braking acceleration is too low and my engines are roaring and I have to evade from the planet.
When Slow Down goes away I can slow down the ship normally.
Why is this, it seems to troll me.

The game thinks you are going too fast to allow you to decelerate enough to exit Super Cruise at your destination.

I usually SC with my speed set to the top of the first two blue rectangles on my speed indicator.
At least for the second half of my journey. This way you usually automatically decelerate when approaching the planet (due to its gravity mcguffin handwavium science) to correctly slow down enough to drop out of SC when you reach your target.

It's effectiveness is proportional to the gravity well your ship is passing through is the easiest way to think about it.
