With the flood of bug reports from the new beta I thought I'd just take the opportunity to say thank you to FD for getting the SMAA and the Ambient occlusion working properly again. Thanks guys
If you were in a big shiny ice-field being lit by a star wouldn't that kind of be the look you'd expect? There's a lot of highly reflective surfaces and particles kicking around, I would have thought that shadows would pretty much be wiped out (it's why you can get conditions when skiing when if the light is diffused a bit you lose all contrast and it's *really* hard to see contours).
Yeah, it seems FD went with the 1.3 icy rings rather than staying with the 1.4 look. It's unfortunate...
What's even more unfortunate is that we will NEVER see the beauty of 1.0 rings.
And it's not the shadows that are missing. This is entirely a design aspect.
I can understand you might prefer the aesthetic but surely if you've got very reflective surfaces they're going to be pretty bright and also you're going to lose the darkness on the other side due to reflected light from other bodies? The artists impressions NASA has kicked out of Saturn's rings show them as fairly bright.
