Small Cats Pack

I'm currently working on a zoo with only cats, and I'm really noticing the huge lack of small cats.

So! A Small Cats of the World pack! I doubt something like this will ever happen, but please, this would be great. Probably a fairly easy pack to make, too, and with great rewards. All my fellow cat lovers: design your Small Cats animal pack!

My pack:

  1. Jaguarundi: representing South American rainforests, the only member of the genus Herpailurus. Is either smokey black or smokey brown. It is oddly shaped for a cat, with a small head, long body, and long tail.
    Genus: Herpailurus. Species: Yagouaroundi.
    Conservation status: Least concern.
  2. Pampas cat: representing South American grasslands and highlands. One of 8 members of the genus Leopardus. The Ocelot, Margay, Southern tiger cat, and Oncilla inhabit mostly the rainforests in Central and South America, and the Jaguarundi above already occupies that niche in this pack. The Geoffroy's cat, Pampas cat, Andean mountain cat, and Kodkod all live in other habitats and ranges. Of these, the Pampas cat has the largest range and lives in various habitats, including Andean highlands, and Patagonian grasslands, scrub forests, and semi-deserts. It is also colorful and has multiple distinct color morphs. The Ocelot is the most popular choice in this genus, but I felt the Pampas cat had the most to add to this pack. Besides, with the Ocelot's popularity, I think it is bound to come to the game at some point in another pack such as a rainforests biome pack, or Central America pack.
    Genus: Leopardus. Species: Colocolo.
    Conservation status: Near threatened.
  3. Asian golden cat: representing Asian forests and grasslands. One of two members of the Catopuma genus. I chose this species over the Bay cat because the golden cat has many beautiful color morphs, and inhabits a much larger range and varied habitats compared to the Bay cat, which is only found on Borneo.
    Genus: Catopuma. Species: Temminckii.
    Conservation status: Near threatened.
  4. Pallas cat: representing Asian highlands, the only member of the genus Otocolobus. Is a stocky fluffy little mountain cat.
    Genus: Otocolobus. Species: Manul.
    Conservation status: Least concern.
  5. Fishing cat: representing Asian mangroves. One of 5 members of the genus Prionailurus. I chose this species over the leopard cats, Flat-headed cat and Rusty spotted cat because the Fishing cat lives in a unique habitat for a cat: it is a water-loving cat that swims and dives and prefers mangroves, swamps, lakes, and streams.
    Genus: Prionailurus. Species: Viverrinus.
    Conservation status: Vulnerable.
  6. Serval: representing African grasslands, the only member of the the genus Leptailurus. It is an elegant cat with a tiny head, tall ears, and long legs.
    Genus: Leptailurus. Species: Serval.
    Conservation status: Least concern.
  7. Sand cat: representing sandy and stony deserts from the Middle East and North Africa. One of 7 members of the genus Felis. Other members of this genus include several wildcats, jungle cats, and the domestic cat. I chose the Sand cat because this is the only cat species, and would be one of the few rare animals in-game, that is a true desert-dwelling animal.
    Genus: Felis. Species: Margarita.
    Conservation status: Least concern.
  8. Caracal: representing African and Asian grasslands and scrub forests. One of two members of the genus Caracal. I chose the Caracal over the African golden cat because there already is a golden cat in this pack, and because the Caracal is currently the most popular small cat on the Meta Wishlist.
    Genus: Caracal. Species: Caracal.
    Conservation status: Least concern.
I believe this is a balanced pack because it has 8 distinct small cat species representing 8 different cat genera. They cover all sorts of different habitats and ranges all over the world. Together with the Eurasian lynx, Cougar, and Cheetah, this pack would complete the Felinae subfamily.

I'd love to see something like this, as unlikely as it is. My list would mostly copy yours - caracal, serval, fishing, sand, and Pallas are must-haves. Your first three don't strike me as essential to the same degree. Maybe it's a regional thing, but I'm not aware of any zoos in the US that have any of them, at least. I'd personally swap those for the ocelot and bobcat (regional bias, shrug) and then if we're sticking to 8 animals for whatever reason I'd top it off with the black-footed cat.

That said, the Pampas cat in particular is really beautiful so I wouldn't be opposed to it (or any of those three) if it meant rounding out the small cat roster with the ones I consider essential.

This idea is very good! But in my opinion i would choose an ocelot. I know it do not look so much as a cat, but for a look of felines is a must have for me. I like so much this idea, my favourites are definitely the sand cat and the Asian golden cat!

Interesting line up! I know there's a temptation to put an ocelot in the game as it's one of the more well known felines not in the game as yet. But replacing it with the Jaguarundi is an interesting take. Even if you didn't intend to, that's my mind making that connection and substitution.

I'm against packs of animal groups (such as cats, primates, hoofstock etc.) in general, but if they were spread out over several different packs, I would love it if the final small cat roster looked like this! Caracal, Serval and Sand Cat are probably my highest wants out of these. I'd also appreciate an Ocelot, but feel like I would like the Jaguarundi even more, just because the Ocelot would be the obvious pick. (I'd still take both if presented with the option, of course.)

And also Mexico and very southern south US (Texas)

Yes. Argentina is forgotten

It would be a nice idea as I love wild cats but the Ocelot together with the Caracal and the Serval are a must for me. It is difficult but I would replace the Pampas Cat for the Ocelot.

That was my line of thought as well :) I did really consider putting in the Ocelot for the genus Leopardus. Still, I couldn't justify two South American rainforest cats, especially if it came at the cost of the Pampas cat, which represents an entirely different region that is mostly overlooked in the game. I could also have chosen the Ocelot and the Pampas cat, leaving out the Jaguarundi. But then I'd leave out the genus Herpailurus, which is so uniquely different from any other cat species.

A very solid pack of small cats - the only changes I would make are replacing the jaguarundi with the ocelot and replacing the Pampas cat with the European wildcat, so that all five continents with species of native wild cats would be represented.
I described above why I could not leave out the Pampas cat and Jaguarundi.
I also thought of choosing the European wildcat, but it would have replaced the Sand cat in the Felis genus. The Sand cat presents a unique cat habitat and has a very different phenotype from the other small cats, so I didn't want to do that. In the end, Europe and North America are not (or very little) represented in this pack's roster. However, they already are represented by genera in the Felinae subfamily that this pack focuses on. Genus Puma, species concolor (the cougar), the only member of the Puma genus, already covers North America. Genus Lynx, species lynx (the Eurasian lynx), one of four members of the Lynx genus, already covers Europe and northern Asia. Which is also the reason I left out the bobcat, which would be another Lynx species :)

Together with the cheetah (genus Acinonyx, species jubatus), this pack would see every Felinae genera represented in the game:
  • Acinonyx (cheetah)
  • Puma (cougar)
  • Lynx (Eurasian lynx)
  • Leopardus (pampas cat)
  • Herpailurus (jaguarundi)
  • Caracal (caracal)
  • Catopuma (Asian golden cat)
  • Felis (sand cat)
  • Leptailurus (serval)
  • Otocolobus (pallas cat)
  • Prionailurus (fishing cat)
The only genus left is Pardofelis, which only has one member: the Marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata). This would have been another spotted forest cat from Southeast Asia, and it would have to replace one of the other genera represented in this pack. I felt the other genera had more to offer, and the niche of Southeast Asian forest is already covered with the fishing cat and Asian golden cat.
