Small Mammal Discussion

One of my favorite trends in recent packs is the newfound inclusion of small mammals (as well as the African Penguin, a small bird). I love these, and I'd love to see more. So, without further ado, a list of small (under 10 pounds) mammals in-game:
  • Chinese Pangolin
  • Lemurs (Red-Ruffed, Black-and-White-Ruffed, Ring-Tailed)
  • Colombian White-Faced Capuchin Monkey
  • Foxes (Fennec, Arctic)
  • Meerkat
  • Black-Tailed Prairie Dog
  • Asian Small-Clawed Otter
  • Platypus
... and a list of species of that size I'd like to see, with my most wanted in bold.
  • Allen's Swamp Monkey
  • White-Nosed Coati
  • Geoffroy's Spider Monkey
  • Golden Lion Tamarin
  • Three-Banded Armadillo
  • Luzon Cloud Rat
  • Sand Cat
  • Black-Footed Ferret

I love small mammals because they are so useful for so many things -- small mammal houses, themed areas, as filler. The ones we have in-game are great, and I'd personally want more. So, thoughts? Do you enjoy small mammals in Planet Zoo, or not? And what are your favorites and most wanted species?

I really do like a mix of large and small animals, when I look at my own in game favorites - Red Panda/Meerkat/Koala/ASC Otter/Capybara vs. Giant Panda/African Elephant/Lion/Bengal Tiger/Giraffe to my own personal top 10. I guess that all depends on what you define as a small animal though. Some might say the Capybara is not a small animal but I feel it is. To me, anything that's typically less than 200 pounds (91 kilograms) is something I'd consider small, because it fits in the weight range of the average human adult.

To me, small animals should and need to have a presence in zoo line ups. I realize the main draws are usually going to be the megafauna, but the smaller animals prove to be popular as well and give variety, and they also work so well with being in between megafauna habitats.

I think for smaller animals, there's Wombats, Wolverines, Porcupines, Leopards (both African and Amur are less than the 200 lb mark by far), Raccoons, Coatimundis, Howler Monkeys, Jackals, Gibbons, Sloths, Tasmanian Devil, Maned Wolf, Tree Kangaroos, Tayra (people need to get on the Tayra train because they're so cute. Vicious but cute), just to name a few. Again, some may not fit into a person's category for small animal, but I'm using it for mine.

I like small animals and enjoy building enclosures for them. My new zoo has mostly smaller animals. The biggest are water buffalo and elk (moose).

In terms of zoos I am most interested in boreal/Eurasian zoos, Japan and Australia and these are the main focuses of my building. So the smaller animals on my meta wish list submissions are:

Short-beaked echidna
Tasmanian devil
Australian pelican
Common wombat
Yellow-footed rock wallaby
Little blue penguin

Geoffroy's Spider Monkey

Wolverine
Alpine marmot
Eurasian otter
Raccoon dog

I’d also like some small cats like serval, Pallas cat and caracal, red fox, mara, coati and although I’m not a fan of monkeys we could do with more of them. And of course birds, especially ducks, geese and swans but here I’m thinking mostly of mammals.

Let's not forget the North American reps in this group:
  • Striped Skunk
  • Virginia Opossum
  • Porcupine(ok so males can be a good bit larger than 10pounds, but females are in the 10-15 pound range)
  • Black Footed Ferret
  • American Mink

I am also quite happy about the inclusion of more small animals. I really like using them as "gap fillers" for spaces between bigger habitats.
In the beginning of the game, it felt like Frontier was intentionally avoiding them, maybe because of worries that they might be too small to visually work well in the game.

By the way, I would also love if we had some even smaller mammals (like mice) for exhibits! No reason for only having reptiles, insects, etc. in those, right?

Don't forget the ASCO and platypus! "Under 10 pounds" also covers the low end of adult red panda weights. Granted, I certainly wouldn't have known those for sure without looking them up first. So I'm sure some of my list will exist outside of that threshold as well (particularly because I'm copying half of it from a previous post), but here goes;
  • Fishing cat
  • Sand cat
  • Pallas's cat
  • Common genet
  • Yellow mongoose
  • Patagonian mara
  • Brazilian porcupine
  • Matschie's tree kangaroo
  • Rock hyrax
  • Two-toed sloth
  • Three banded armadillo
  • Fossa
  • Squirrel monkey
  • White-faced saki
  • Golden lion tamarin
  • Emperor tamarin
  • Vervet monkey
  • Crowned lemur
  • South American coati
  • Prevost's squirrel
  • Bush dog
  • Raccoon dog
  • Red fox
I love all of the small mammals we have, but clearly, there's so much more that can be done. Small mammals are my favorites.

I very much enjoy building smaller enclosures and some of the small animals are my favourite. What else I would like? I included also some smaller birds (without aviary needed) and reptiles if that is ok.

  • MORE monkeys ! - Howler Monkey, Saki Monkey, Squirrel Monkey, Golden Lion Tamarin....too many options.
  • Roseatte Spoonbill
  • African Spurred Tortoise
  • Coati
  • Tamandua
  • Crested Porcupine
  • Honey Badger
  • Fossa
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Wombat
  • Any wallaby species
  • Kiwi
  • Sea otter
  • Sand Cat
  • Genet or Civet species
  • Little Blue Penguin

There is probably alot of more, but these comes to my mind immediately.

Small mammals are often one of my favourite parts in real zoos and are, I think, hugely important for Planet Zoo. These are the animals I would most want to see included:
  • Yellow-throated marten: My most-wanted animal at all; it mostly fits the less than 10 pounds size cut-off, but the larger males can exceed it. Beautiful, adaptable and not uncommonly kept.
  • Other small carnivores: The Owston's civet is definitely my second most-wanted carnivore, but I would also like to see things like the white-nosed coati, banded mongoose and margay.
  • More small African monkeys, like the Wolf's guenon or Northern talapoin: both of these species are kept in mixed enclosures with animals like the mandrill, pygmy hippo and gorilla.
  • Parma wallaby: this is the smallest of all true wallabies, is commonly-kept in Europe and has an interesting conservation history - it was thought to be extinct from the end of the 19th century until feral ones were rediscovered living in New Zealand.
  • More rodents: Top of my most-wanted rodents are the Eurasian red squirrel and the Southern springhare; I would also love to see one of the larger rat species - either the Madagascar giant rat, the Gambian giant pouched rat or the Northern Luzon giant cloud rat, all of which have been kept outdoors in UK zoos.
  • A rabbit: Either the European rabbit or volcano rabbit would be great additions, personally speaking.
  • An armadillo: Certainly here in Europe, the biggest and most elaborate outdoor enclosures for armadillos are typically for the six banded armadillo, which is probably my top choice.

Small animals were and still are very welcome to the game and for me they are important because every zoo has them between the big Stars (elephant, polar bear, big cats). It makes a more realistic feeling to put small animals between them.
Good further choices would be:
Porcupine
Armadillo
Coati
Sloth
Mara
Agouti
Kiwi
Monkeys (whatever)
Echidna
Wombat
Wallaby
Alpine Marmot
Rock Hyrax
Racoon
...

But also some small deers or antelopes like:
Dik Dik
Muntjac
Pudu

Small Cats:
Ocelot
Carvalho
Serval
Perhaps Pallas Cat

I would love tamarins, tamandua, coati, other small monkeys, more lemurs, raccoon. But also really small ones like tarsiers and sugar gliders.
