Small ship landing on medium pad?

Any ship can land (or spawn) on any pad that's big enough. It doesn't happen often because there is more pad choice available but is is something that has always been possible.
A small ship can be allocated any size of pad, a medium ship can be allocated medium or large, naturally a large pad ship can only land on a large pad.

Same rules apply to both. A theoretical dock with only a single large pad could service any ship.
Just because a small pad is empty doesn't mean there isn't someone already docked at it but below in the hanger. I have sometimes had my medium ship land on a large pad. A small ship landing on a medium looks strange because the pad appears so large, a medium landing on a large is remarkable, the pad just seems to stretch away into the distance! Should be interesting when it happens in Odyssey!
If you log in to a busy port in open you can also sometimes spawn on an oversized pad because all the smaller ones in your instance are already taken. They won't hesitate to assign you a larger pad if necessary. It's just rare to hit all the right conditions to end up in that situation.
I have seen small ships land on larger pads, on and off for over 5 years. It happens. can be annoying if you are waiting for that medium pad though LOL
I've had it happen, usually at an outpost with only 2 small pads.
Just because they look unoccupied doesn't mean there isn't a player (or npc) in the pad's hanger.
