Small ships to use against Thargoids

Well, with the EX-Missiles as S2 mounts we are somewhat limited but let's look at what we CAN use.

The Cheap One (Base hull under 1 million)

- Adder: With 1 top mount it can fit 1 missile and with X2 utility points it can utilize both the experimental scanner AND chaff. Also, multicrew options.
- iEagle: Faster, a little more shield same hardpoint configuration but with only 1 utility point it's a little less flexible.
- Viper: The staple Viper with X2 mediums and X2 utility points it's a solid choice.
- Cobra MkIII: Well, it's the first ship to kill Thargoids 30 years ago with similar hardpoints to the Viper and pretty g fast so it's a clear YES for the puritan in me.
- Viper MkIV: Slower and more armored but has the hardpoints and utility slots for the job, speed might be an issue as well as maneuverability
- D.Scout: With the same hardpoint config as the Viper and X4 utility slots, good heat management and jump range it should do fairly well.
- Cobra MkIV: While hardpoints and utility slots are good the speed and maneuverability is not. Can armour tank pretty well though and Thargoids seem to skip module damage.

The Expensive Ones (+1 million base hull

- D.Explorer: With the capacity for X3 XE-missiles and X4 utility mounts combined with excellent jump range and space for a S4 shield this is a good choice.
- iCourier: On par with the D.Explorer in mounts and excellent shields and speed (while i find this ship horribly unbalanced with it's extreme shields it IS a solid choice).
- Vulture: Good shields and utility slots but it's price and jump range combined with oversized hardpoints compared to the weapons would make me pick something cheaper.

I would most likely pick a D.Explorer due to more internal slots and jump range over the iCourier, Or a Cobra MkIII. Going on the cheap i would choose an Adder over the iEagle due to the +1 utility point.

EDIT: Note, I do not expect these ships to take out Thargoids in 1 on 1 engagement but rather as a group or in a supporting role to larger ships.

There's a flaw in your list.
As of now you have to have 4 bugspray missiles to do enough of damage to the goid or you'll run out of ammo.

Well I have been running about in a hauler all weekend in open rescuing stranded pilots (escape pods) from the aliens clutches. Been fun albeit that hull drops quite fast.
I could see small ships helping greatly in a medic role though, and assisting without the missiles. Set for some repair limpits and a regen lazer, they can also assist with the shield removal of the alien scum.

Well, i never said 1 small ship would take out a Thargoid themselves saw it more as a group effort.

Oh right, I'm sorry.
I'm a solo player hence my mindset. lol
One suggestion for small ships: goid moves at about 450 km/s and swarm&caustic damage are pretty lethal. I killed a goid in FDS with 4k+ hull so for small ships I'd do hit'n'run tactics.

Which would suggest ships with speed like iCourier, iEagle, Viper and Cobra mkIII. The D.Explorer might get speed issues as it seems to top out around 450 boost.

I think the (pimped) iCourrier is the only "real" option here :

most C2 slots for a small frame, and (more importantly), it can outrun the goids'* without having to gimp it in terms of outfitting.

*Because picking a small ship that can't outrun the goids' is going to be a serious problem IMO :)

Though a Cobra mkIII with good hull reinforcements could be an interesting pick (but then I don't know much speed remains...).
Damn, I wish there were C4 enh. drives...

I was able to survive for a decent time with a thargoid after me in my Cobra Mk4 which is fitted out for exploration mostly.

Of course... I wasn't able to do much damage, but if I had been in a wing, I'm confident my contribution would have been significant.

I would love to see a wing of Adders or Imperial Eagles take down a Thargoid. Gotta show love for the lil' guy's.
