Brighton beach could become smoke-free under plans to be considered on Tuesday.

The proposal to extend the current smoking ban in pubs, cafes and shopping centres to outdoor public areas will be discussed by Brighton and Hove City Council as it meets to decide whether public consultation should go ahead.

If agreed, the consultation period will run from Wednesday for 12 weeks.

Brighton Council already has a voluntary ban on smoking in children's play areas, but now the city's parks and beaches could be smoke-free too.

Having driven along the road past Brighton beach many times, I can confirm it is very crowded in Summer.

Bah! Thought this was going to be about smoking foods.

Any who, I'm not really a smoker, some times a cigar, or a pipe.. but that's MAYBE 5 or 6 times a year.

Honestly, between the cost of it, and what it does do your health.. I don't understand why people do it as much as they do.

My wife's never really been a smoker, but she started one of those eCig/Vape things, she seems to like it. And since she's doing the non-nicotine stuff.. I don't mind.

Oh guld,
1st, the poll at the top is just a tad bias towards non smoking, don't you think?
2nd, are they going to include the new 'vapes' in the ban? I doubt it.
3rd, nicotine is one of the hardest habits to break.
4th, some have been doing it for decades, like myself and if it was not so profitable to governments etc, it would have been banned decades ago.
5th, the grounds for banning in open air spaces on health grounds are ridiculous. Example, if you want the people on Brighton beach, to be free from risk of carcinogens, then you have to ban all the cars, trucks and any jet aircraft etc 1st. Yes, I agree 100%, I don't smoke around kids and a will ask if it is ok, in a private space that is not my own. This is just another example of one group dictating how an another should live and behave. The real sad thing is, when the vote happens, there will be people in the room, who will feel intimidated into voting against their own feelings and beliefs.

Apologies if the poll seemed biased. I have nothing against smoking personally and did smoke once. I would be doing so now if other factors had not interfered with my health.

I should point out that for a moderate smoker, kissing a heavy smoker is like kissing an old chimney. I have only kissed one smoker since I stopped and that was pretty gross. But otherwise fine.

I think you'll find that vapping is going to be included in most smoking restrictions. If not immediatly, then later. If you follow the news, the claims that it is probematic to varying degrees are becoming more frequent. This is always an indication that our ruling classes are building up to something.

As for giving up. Yes, I recall from my days in medicine people who'd managed to give up Heroin claimed it was more difficult to give up smoking. There may have been other factors involved there but it is significant.

I'm number 3 - Don't smoke but don't mind those that do

Me too :)

Vapping is a very large can of worms, that is with us to stay and little can be done now, as it is too late. Branded and sold as the better alternative to real smoking has made it very acceptable and very profitable. However, a lack of 'time testing' along with the effect of people using it, who may never had smoked before it came along, are causing issues similar to smoking its self. Some people vapping, have an attitude that, they are told it is harmless, so therefore, doing no harm, therefore, do it where and how they please. Some will not be told otherwise, even demand the right to do so, as the law stands, it is legal everywhere. Plus, like the possible dangers of mobile phones, any dangers that exist, are dismissed on grounds of profit and social acceptance.

Please tick the first box. It looks so lonely for it up there. :(
After smoking for over 40 years, the top does not apply to me. I smoke because I am an addict to it, it is not cool and most grown ups, know other wise. Oh and it is more expensive to quit than to smoke. Not just financially, un-mellowed I do have a bit of a temper.

If we were meant to smoke we would be born with the ability to smoke when born and were not. It's about time this habit was given its proper designation as a health hazard.

Need one for ex-smokers who are the worst complainers!

I used to smoke (amongst other things) but can't stand the smell until I'm outrageously sloshed. At which point I usually have a cigarette.

I accept your point about vapping. And will add that smoking tabacco, along with using various drugs including alcohol, all are here to stay.

But will any of these be permitted on Brighton Beach?

Now Southsea Beach, that's a different matter. I don't doubt the twon council there will follow Brighton and ban it there as well, but much like their famed 20MPH speed limit, I seriously doubt the local police will bother to enforce it.

The police on Brighton tend to like a scrap to they will probably enforce the regulations. Though if need be, I can imagine the town council there appointing a few warderns.

Southsea? Unlikely.

As an ex smoker of 15 years I can't stand to be around a smoker. Partly cos it makes me want one and partly because of how much better I feel without them. The main reason I don't like smokers smoking near me is that it smells disgusting and I don't want to smell your second hand breath.

Wardens, will bring in more income for the council. Aha, another money spinner.

The problem is being that there is no police on the beat here as they are being scrapped who would enforce it?

Yeah... drinking kills, and wrecks families!
That would be next on the list, like it or not the nanny state passes bylaws to take even more control over parts of your life.

Having lived on Brighton seafront for nearly 20 years now and also having run pubs in the centre of the city for the last 12 of them, I can only really say that any ban will be completely unenforceable.

Hundreds of thousands of people use our beaches every summer and on the best of days it can take a couple of hours to get police to turn up for anything but the most major of incidents. Even then it's usually just a couple of pcso's with no actual real powers, who turn up,laugh and joke with the troublemakers and then walk away again,If the troublemakers are even still there by that point of course.

Brighton has for many years held the record for the most drug deaths per capita of anywhere in the uk,it has one of the biggest homeless populations outside of London and the police say that Its West street nightclub area has more alcohol related violence than anywhere else in the county.

It's a simple case of priorities. They can go ahead and ban it,but no one here will take any notice at all.

Interestingly, the Green party want to make Brighton the first place in the UK to license the selling of cannabis...and ban smoking in public places? Yep,that'll work..

So it will be a case of the new wardens asking the question. What are you smoking there? Oh that's ok then, carry on.

You missed a very relevant option in your poll:
Would you allow any co-pilot or anyone else for that matter to smoke in the cockpit or anywhere else in your ship?
Not even in the loo!:D
Does the Sidewinder even have a loo?
