Smoother picture on 120Hz monitor at 60FPS

So I've kept playing with Vsync on and refresh rate capped at 60Hz for ages. I always though it's the best solution if I can't run my game at stable 120 FPS at full 120 Hz. But the game always felt a bit...choppy, even if meter shows perfect 60 frames. Something just doesn't feel right. Started experimenting with different frame caps and refresh rates and found and interesting solution. If you set your refresh rate at 120, but cap FPS to 60 with Vsync OFF game just feels smooth as butter. What gives?
Just putting it out there, since comments about slightly choppy game feel pop up from time to time. I guess it only applies to those who have 120Hz capable monitor.

By limiting the GPU to 60 fps which it can easily handle, you are giving the monitor the same frame for 2 scans, an even division. Which always works out well.

EDIT: I did some quick experiments with my system. With G-sync off and limiting the frame rate to 60 and the refresh rate to 120hz I get the a very smooth game play but I don't see any difference by increasing the monitor refresh rate to 144hz. If I bring my frame rate cap to 120 fps I will occasionally see some light stuttering. With G-sync on I see no difference at all and very smooth at what ever frame rate I'm running. I guess the main thing here is that you are limiting the GPU to a frame rate that it can easily handle. If you are not running Free sync or G-sync then limiting the refresh rate to a multiple of the frame rate could help with the visuals. It's hard to say as you don't have an in game option for 90 fps or 90 hz for me to test. The lowest frame rate I usually see on my system/configuration is 75 fps and most of the time near stations I'm at 90+.
