Ships Smuggling - Getting Started

I have a cutter currently outfitted under the standard trade loadout, both grade 8 slots used by cargo racks, grade 6 shields, and more cargo racks. Has an engineered FSD and achieves 32LY Unladen.

I want to get involved more in smuggling, would you suggest if I were to do this to change my loadout at all? Taking into account the longer travel distances that usually come with smuggling, should I lose one of the grade 8 cargo racks and go back to a larger shield generator?

Any advice experienced smugglers could give would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Commander. May I ask what you are smuggling and if you are smuggling in open or Pve / Solo?

Smuggling in a Cutter - have you really thought this through??

All I can suggest is you have plenty of credits for the inevitable rebuys.

Why? - because smuggling usually involves transporting illegal goods into stations or bases without getting scanned by the authorities. The best way to do this is to fly at speed into a station before getting scanned or the scan completes - the Cutter is a big drifty ship and you have very little margin for error if the slot is clear - even less if a Beluga or T9 is on its way out.

As Ben suggested, what are you trying to smuggle and where do you plan on doing it.

A smaller (read cheaper) ship like an Asp or a Cobra is likely to be a better bet and wont send you broke with rebuys.

Good luck CMDR.
