...Anyone else looking at this update & thinking "when I've done modding that boat, that's the only ship I'll ever need."?

I am. I have a plan laid out for my boat. When finished, I'll get rid of everything else.

Ill keep my at least one ship of each size just incase I wanna switch rolls, also remember player docking is coming aswell so either having a super cruiser to launch your friends or move them around, or to be the one to get launched out of a ship sounds really fun aswell.

I've seen some footage of ships cruising at over 600 m/s and boosting in the neighborhood of 840 m/s... I've also heard rumors of footage out there with Cutters having over 8000 MJ shields...

So... anyone who had any meta figured out, get back to the drawing boards... The game is changing with this update a GREAT deal...

I'm worried about this too, with all of the upgrades we will have access to it seems like we will be able to make some ships way too strong. Now i know its going to take a long time to get the materials needed to upgrade, but it still seems like too much. The engineers will completely change how the game is played, im not saying that i dont want the update, I just want it to be balanced. Hopefully as the beta goes on everything gets worked out and we get a somewhat balanced launch.

In a sense. My smuggling DBX is about to get faster i know and jump farther, as well as my DBS fighter geting a decent speed power plant and shield bonus(and thats not even getting into HRP and Bulkhead mods). :D

My Asp...hmm...Likely gonna max it's jump range for a Sag A speen run. :p

I'm sure thats most likely going to be only on FGS, Conda, Cutter, and Corvette PLUS limited to Condor and the Imp. Fighter.

This. Remind me again, this one's my elbow, right? and the other...:S
For our 'Murican cousins, this one's Shinola, right? etc...

Mixing it up can never be a bad thing. Oh wait, the missus just said she wants to try that thing we saw in the movie. Erm....brb

Yep, it's mixing up the meta BUT ED is a sim. RL has no balancing. Be grateful, I say. :D

I can appreciate your sentiments here... but come on. ED a sim? When's the last time someone went faster than light? Or mapped a trip to Sag A including detail scans of all planets along the way? When's the last time there was a dog fight in space? Have you ever seen shields that are rated in MJ?

I will grant that space shuttles dock at the ISS, though it is a very different process than ED I am sure... and Virgin air is trying to make a luxury space liner (Orca?)

The argument of ED being a "sim" I cannot take seriously. Sure, it has sim-like qualities, but a sim it most certainly is not.

I don't have a problem with more content, or ne content, or new meta, or anything they are trying to do. I've had my money share of fun out of the game thus far, and if it gets to the point where I do not have fun with it, I will simply stop playing. Now, changing the core of the game with all of these mods may just do that for me... Time will tell.

But ED a sim? Come on man...

Naw, I'm a collector, especially with the unlockable faction ships. I'll most likely have a variety of ships for different roles.

Well, ive got 2 asp explorers both kitted for long range smuggling, 1 gunned build, 1 stealth build, i have 1 conda which i swap between trading and explporation, 1 corvette combat build, and 1 FDL combat build. Next ship will be a cutter for trading. If the panther clipper is launched i think i,ll have one of those too. I also have several small ships like eagles, sidies, a cobra just for taxiing about in. I like my ship collection and see no reason to sell them, it wouldnt make much difference to my credit balance :)

For the most part I have no plans for the Engineers update.
We are essentially getting 2 updates in 1. With the base Horizons being the 'meat' of the update.
I plan on catching up on all the planetary exploration things before moving on to the engineers.

Although, turning my iEagle into a stupidly fast planet speeder may be on the cards :D

Unless There's an update planned that will allow me to fly a Majestic Class Interdictor as my main ship then my Imperial Cutter is now and always will be my only ship. --Momentai :3

Maybe towards the end of the year. If I'm gonna get a boat that does everything, it'll need EVERYTHING, that means I'll need the capacity to have ship launched fighters

I chose my words poorly but I don't concede your point. My intent was to convey that ED is a game that does try to cleave to its own internal logic rather than simply saying 'because...Games!' However, you seem to have ignored what I said about the lack of balancing in RL. NO SIM EVER has attempted to model the types of things you point out as flaws in my argument. Nor should they. Nor would you 'mix up the meta' in a sim, as I acknowledged FDev are doing.
Finally at the risk of being utterly pedantic (Hey, did you actually see how much you attacked my position with spurious examples? Did you see that you didn't even make a counter proposal of what ED is?) most people's accepted definition of 'Simulation' includes acceptance of the sim being limited to only the key areas of the subject under study. ED meets this criterion. Given the limitations of tech, time, manpower, and available knowledge ED is a very advanced sim. Indeed, someone correct me if I'm wrong but Braben is very proud that ED predicted extra-solar planets before the scientific community actually found any. ED is a sim. QED. :D
EDIT: Before you or someone else mentions the elephant in the room of my argument... Superluminal speeds are impossible. Certainly currently, probably eternally. However, simulation allows for experimentation, in this case, 'if we WERE somehow able to travel at superluminal speeds what would some of observable universe look like?'

I think most people consider it a political sim', not a flight sim'.

Not me. Sometimes a change of scenery is good, plus I like to have a ship available for whatever I fancy doing at the time. For example, if I wanted to go exploring I wouldn't do it in my FDL. All the ships handle differently as well, so you get a slightly different experience with each one.
