The codex entry for the Dark Wheel mentions something about how they will appear in disguise and only reveal themselves to those who pass some significant combat test.
Pure speculation: what if the “Thargoids” we’ve been encountering are Dark Wheel drone vessels or emmissaries?
Could that be why they don’t destroy star ports? Maybe the incursions and attacks are just the means through which the Dark Wheel identifies and recruits talented combat pilots.
Maybe the Thargoids died out long ago. Maybe the “real” thargoids (I.e., the more aggressive brood or caste) are on their way here and the Dark Wheel is trying to ready a response force through combat simulations?
But then again, maybe all this half-baked lore is just a macguffin and there will never been any kind of pay off or connection.
