So... apparently heat sinks don't work anymore for avoiding scans.

Where you actually SR, or just running ultra cold ?

ultra cold with fa off, sensors thrusters and light shields only. heat profile was effectively the same as SR and my temp remained 0 for the duration of the scan. He shouldn't have seen me from beyond 5km, much less scanned me.

question is, whether he locked on you before, whether the ship that scan you was the ship 5 km away.... and which ship you have flown/ he has flown (auto-resolve distance/ sensor quality). by chance - do you have a video, or more details? I'd suggest raising a bug report, i haven't seen patch notes saying heat-mechanics have been change...

In my experience the only thing that stops scans is getting out of range really quick. Or entering a station at full speed.
Silent running is useless.

The heat sinks like chaff are on the list of things to fix. They only work on human players...allegedly

Two of the times I couldn't have been locked onto as I was on my way into a station and approximately 9km away when the scan was detected, security ships weren't even ghosts on my sensors yet, one time potentially I could have been locked onto by security before I dropped my temperature on my way out of the toast rack, but the other time they were busy poking at a type 9 that had apparently earned their ire.

No video unfortunately. I will toss a bug report up though. Could just be instancing being weird.

If you don't have silent running on, I think it doesn't really count. Not sure, just what I think. I've never been successfully scanned by a cop, I always use silent running.

People really need to stop spreading misinformation like that. There are tons of threads with good advice on the correct way to use silent running and/or going cold.

Can you link to one or two (good ones) to help out?

All a heat sink does is temporarily act like silent running, maintaining 10% or lower heat output is what you need to aim for if just firing off heatsinks. Personally I just run silent, fire off the heat sinks when internal buildup reaches 80% (to prolong time running silent) I drop out early and make sure the ship is cold before getting anywhere near the station. Never get caught unless a make an alcohol related mistake, top speed of my ship is 204m/S under boost

One time I was docked and inside the station when I got scanned while underground and the security started shooting at me in the landing bay they couldn't hit me but kept scanning me inside the base. I think I was just wanted from having accidently shooting a security vessel in a RES.

I tried relogging and it happened again after logging in.

Is that supposed to happen?

I was inside one of the big letterbox stations like a D14 shape or whatever.

Yep agreed, I've seen videos on Youtube for how to use silent running to do smuggling missions but as far as I can tell they're complete nonsense. Silent running only works against cmdrs, NPCs just completely ignore it both with regard to scans and with regard to being able to fire on you with gimbals and turrets.

The misinformation comes from FD, they don't comunicate how the mechanics work.
Side note, entering at full speed at a station is a really stupid gameplay mechanic. No one notice you racing through the door, right.

It seems to me that NPCs also have eyes, even when silent running if you pass in front of them they will see you and initiate a scan.

You can normally avoid this by approaching the station directly in front of the slot from 8km or more combined with silent running.

Non of the above is new, it has been the case since I started playing in 1.2. I was bulk smuggling then before the long range missions made smuggling popular.

Speed is your best defence if they start a scan. I've not suffered an insta scan myself so can't comment on them.

If system sec or pirate are following you in SC at your destination system you have to high wake out and back in and hope they don't spawn again. In my experience once they have acquired you in SC in your destination system your only option is to destroy them or high wake out and back in. Otherwise they magically appear under your nose when you drop out of SC at the station.

It seems strange that you got scanned at 5km. That is within their lock range, but that *SHOULD* be out of scan range. Are you certain there wasn't another ship closer to you?
