So... can't switch ships without a shipyard?

As per the title. I :

  • flew to an outpost in Ship 1 (which doesn't have a shipyard),
  • docked, disembarked,
  • Apex'ed to a different station
  • Grabbed a different ship (Ship 2)
  • Flew back to the outpost where Ship 1 is, in Ship 2.
  • Can't get on board ship 1

I mean, I can fly to a different system with a shipyard and get Ship 1 transferred there, but this seems like a bit of an oversight...

It's very dumb. The entire "current ship" system is dumb.

They really should have changed the system over to your actual on foot character being the "main" thing, and made your ships into... Vehicles, the ship is still essentially your character, out of which you "deploy" yourself.

It's weird, and a bit sad that they didn't have the guts to fully redesign it (not sure if it's sadder the original design was so locked to ships when they supposedly always wanted to add legs)

not good - but very similar to mounts in a MMO I'm playing, you can only ever have one mount "in world" per character, and to switch mounts you have to visit a stablekeeper NPC. and of course you can leave your mount somewhere, and go somewhere else on foot, and then be in trouble... so... unpleasant but not uncommon.

What should happen is, when you click the lift, it should show all your ships, and you choose one to go to.

Because really, why in the heck does the lift interaction even bring up an extra menu when the only option is "go to ship" anyways.

(Maybe there are more options when in a team?)

What you need to do is undock and summon the Anomaly and change ships there...

Opps... Wrong game... 🤣😉

Don't worry, it is worse. Due to some concerns probably about instantly transferring goods, if you accidentaly forget cargo in Ship 1, then happily poot hundreds of lightyears in an Apex to your other ship, you won't be able to switch, because you have cargo on board. Cost me 2 Million Cr, that one, because I had 1 ton of something in the ship I left behind.

lol... so if you're trying to get on board a ship in one system, but because the last ship you used maybe some 200 Ly away had cargo in it, you won't be able to get on board?

I mean, I've never thought storage of cargo on ships should be a thing for <reasons>, but that's pretty bad XD

I think in Alpha it would have just silently dumped the cargo and transferred anyway, which is bad in it's own way. It would be better if it gave you that option though.
Certainly better then having to call my ship to my location again for 1.5 million Cr, which dumped the cargo on transfer anyway :D I would have rather taken the option to dump the 10k Cr cargo. Oh and the best part, I had to wait the 25 minute transfer time, to swap ships. I went and did a CZ meanwhile, but still...

At part, it might still be because of Horizon, where the ship is you.

They should probably enable the Shipyard at all dockable stations/outposts/settlements (without stock of new ships, as appropriate). With the aid of taxis you can effectively store your ships anywhere now.
Well, inter astra, that would allow foot users to do what the OP wants. Or a working elevator (issue there is of you have 40 ships locally - which you know someone will do)

Has anyone tested what happens if you
  1. land on a planet
  2. dismiss your ship
  3. fly Apex to a station
  4. take another ship to the same planet
  5. dismiss the 2nd ship, too
  6. recall the ship?

So...
  • A limited shipyard/Inter Astra at all locations with as a minimum; change ship but not transfer or buy. (Or done via the elevator menu if on foot).
  • If trying to change ship and your active ship is elsewhere and has cargo, then "Your currently active ship has XX tonnes of cargo which will be lost. Continue Y/N?).
  • A way to transfer a ship to you, that was left 'dismissed', from a full-service shipyard/Inter Astra.

You get your 2nd ship landing. Not sure how you'd get your first ship back without loading Horizons to force it to a station (if it's an atmospheric planet, non-atmospheric who knows).

This ^.

All concourses have Inter Astra, so might as well have it provide the functionality to load a locally parked ship to the hangar

Not outposts. They don't get Inter Astra or the Genetics one.
Ok, then probably there might be also larger ports that also don't have it (like some don't have shipyards like Obsidian Orbital).

Then simplest solution would be your second suggestion, to just put locally stored ships as elevator destinations (and account a UI with slider for the folks with 40 ships).

Another possibility would be to have this option to select ship on the concourse consoles. Another somewhat similar ongoing project you just access a console in the ports to load one of your available ships to a hangar.

That’s why I believe that when changing ships, the cargo should not automatically transfer to your new ship. It should be an option especially when your other ship may have less cargo space. It is a cargo hold after all.
