So, Elite: Dangerous? A few words if I may...

HIGHLY doubtful; source?

There was an early interview with David Braben (I think) as to why planetary landings wouldn't be in the first release of E: D, given that Frontier had already pulled it off in both Frontier and First Encounters. The reason given was along the lines of "well we know we can do procedural worlds and terrain, but adding believable content to the terrain such as a large number of realistically sized cities, with different architectural types, to convey the feeling of being on a world with millions of inhabitants to the level expected by today's gamers is outside the scope of the initial release, as we need more time to do it justice". There was also talk of planetary landings being phased as well (i.e. airless moons, followed by outposts on atmosphere worlds would possibly come before landing on major inhabited worlds).
.
I'll try to find the interview - but we are talking back sometime in 2013-ish. ;) *Edit* However, this quote from the Kickstarter FAQ has the same implication (IMHO), based on the question "Can I land on planets?":

Yes, but not in the initial release. Our aim is to make planetary landings a much richer experience than ever before and that requires considerable development effort. To achieve this we'll focus on landing on planets after the initial release.

*Edit 2* See Reddit here - section 'On the planets' : http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDanger...future_of_elite_dangerous_planetary_landings/ which leads to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM0Gcl7iUM8&feature=youtu.be&t=1m16s - right from the man himself. :)

Just try to fit planetary surfaces in 22 kilobytes.

Edit: just ignore me, I think I misunderstood the previous remark.

Yep. I did mean E: D not the original '84 Elite. ;) :D

Troll thread?

Anyway, your argument for expecting 5 years worth of development to have been done in 2 appears to revolve around the fact that the year is 2015. Exactly, it's 2015. Have you seen the state of gaming lately? They release early and update often (at least at first). This game is definitely of it's time.

Some stated that EVE online and WoW were in a similar state regarding amount of content at the time of initial release. Should that be an excuse for game producers? I don't think so.
Actually it's a perfectly valid "excuse" (personally, I'd call it a reason, but lets engage negative bias for a while hey...).

Just coz someone has made something in the past, doesn't mean someone can just instantly replicate it with a snap of a finger. Industries like housing, sure. And if you can, it's because all you've done is written a clone, and people will notice that (and shoot you down for it too)

Personally, show me an MMO that got it all right on day dot and you're statement may be remotely valid.
