So, "Elite" means "Cheating", obviously.

It seems that they rebalanced the NPCs a bit. Namely, they upped their ship stats to ridiculous levels. I was bounty hunting at an asteroid field when this mechanic became obvious.

I mean, you can see it in other games where they have problems to make the computer competetive - rubber banding for racing games, money / research / production advantages for strategy games and now it's the pilots not playing by the same rules.

I mean, it's beyond ridiculous - my Viper has a class 2 shield of quality B. And yet, it takes longer to re-establish and recharge to full than the shield of a lowly Sidewinder, just because the pilot NPC is deemed "dangerous" or "elite". I was able to compare it really easily - I managed to collapse the enemy shield at the same time mine collapsed.

His shield re-established after about 20 seconds - mine took way longer. At least three times that. And after re-establishing, his shield went to full very fast. While mine took its sweet time.

Now, you'll say: Of course - it reloads faster because it's less strong. Nope. In my desperating I was firing both my Burst Lasers (fixed) and my gimbaled Multi Cannons at him. Took me three passes (as in: We were charging at each other from 1.5 km) to get them down again.

Not to mention that this Sidewinder is also more maneuverable than my ship. Thank god for Shield Cell Rechargers - though I've seen the NPCs use those as well now.

But seriously, I don't like it very much when NPCs play by a different rulebook than us without telling us about it.

List your upgrades on your ship. Because shield not the only thing that help them regenerate fast.

Now I'm not the kind to tell people this usually but I have to say, I am also in a viper, and while my shield does take awhile to recharge, it rarely if ever gets knocked out. The Sidewinder may technically be more maneuverable than a Viper (I'm not sure on the specs) but I have never had an issue out gunning or outrunning the "Elite" NPC's in Sideys. Perhaps you are failing to use a technique like turning off Pilot assist while turning? Do you utilize all 6 points of rotation available in space? Not criticizing only trying to help.

It's possible the NPC was using shield cells, maybe?

In any case I think a smaller shield will recharge faster but will always be weaker.

If the shields haven't fully collapsed, then shield cells can replenish them in moments.

Diverting power to systems and using a high quality power distributor also does wonders for improving your shield regen rate.

I had not been interdicted very often for a couple of weeks. Then 3 days ago I changed my fit to just one expensive beam laser (so that I can fire continuously and to save weight)

Straight away the NPC's started interdicting me. I think they know what you have and pick their targets like a human would. Worse as the rest of my cobra is rated A the NPC's had big ships. Eventually an imperial clipper rammed me.

In open play no cmdrs have interdicted me since 16/12. Although most seem to be trading and I only see one or two a day at the most

Shield cells are also useful when your shields have just popped back up again. Perhaps that's why the Sidey got his shields back to full so quickly. Who knows?

Shields recharge based upon Power Distribution, Weight (Current Tonnage), Class (Grade) and Power Management.
The two biggest aspects here are Class (Grade) and Weight, as each Class (and Grade) has an Optimal Weight they support; beyond this it dramatically reduces recharge time. I mean my Viper is using A-3, and I'm only 3Tn over it's Optimal due to the Plasma Accelerator with the recharge taking a good 4-5seconds longer, this gets exasperated by setting power away from Sys; mind keep in mind this also accounts for the Active Rep along side any Shield Cells.

It's better to simply ensure the Shields never drop ^_^
Still I do agree that the NPCs are "cheating" in this respect as their Tonnage is always 'Perfect' for the Equipment rather than based on their weight like we are restricted to.

To be honest I like the tougher npc.
I have no idea if the npc are cheating though. perhaps the quickly reloading npc shields simulates the use of Shield cells? I think that is perfectly acceptable.

I would like FD to develop an AI that is more and more human-like and diverse in it's behavior.
The AI is of great importance for a huge universe like this.

You're viper should have class 3 shield for start..
Took you 3 times longer to heal shield? Upgrade plant and work with pips.
